I'm considering recutting the movie(or doing a Fanedit)

So, I saw this movie at SXSW last March, and while I didn't care for it as a whole, I thought it could make for an interesting short film. So, I'm thinking about recutting the movie and making myself a shorter version, maybe about 50 or 60 minutes long.

I'm thinking I'll start pretty much the same, he'll be shot and killed, have flash backs of his life, and then return to watch over his sister and friends briefly before either being reborn(which I'm leaning towards) or going into the light...

Anyone have any thoughts on that? Am I out of my mind? Am I missing the point in some way? Because honestly, I thought the movie was alittle long and drawn out. It had some great visuals and was an interesting idea, I just felt like it got weighed down by its own gimmick, if that makes sense.

I think a short version might be cool, so I wanted to see what you guys thought about that idea.

Also, it should be noted I have never before attemtped anything like this. This past weekend I wanted to try my hand at editing, so I cut togeather a test video set to some music, just to see what I could do. It's not perfect, but I thought I did pretty good considering I'd never done it before and that I only spent a few hours learning the software and doing this. Its about 5 minutes or so, and I cut ot way down to be just about him dieing, having a flash back of him as a kid and then walking to his death at The Void.

Like I said, not perfect by any means, but it was me doing an editing test, for myself more than anything.

But anyway, what do y'all think about the possibly of a short film version of Enter the Void?

Dude, I love a good fan edit. Don't take those snobs to heart. Once you've put something out there, it's fair game as long as you give due credit I reckon.

Having said that, can I possibly check out your edit?

I think it's silly to re-cut an artists work. I myself may feel it insulting for someone else to come along and reinterpret my film work thinking they are "improving" on it. That being said I would still like to see what you have come up with. Thanks in advance.

You do know what most directors don't edit their own movies, right? Some do of course supervise.

Anyway, There is a long history of fan editing movies...even some pretty famous directors have fan edited movies before. Edgar Wright used to do it when he was younger, and Steven Soderbergh still does it.

And I don't think I'm improving the movie for anyone other than myself. I'm pretty happy with what I did.

As for wanting to watch it, I'll PM you a link. Check it out and see what you think. It's not better, or improved, it's just a slightly different interpretation.

Depends on your definition of "Better".

Besides, I wasn't trying to make it better, per se. I was just trying to make it a little different. So yea, I shouldn't have said "better" above.

Of course, you haven't seen my short version(I don't think), and you don't have to. The shortened version doesn't take anything away from the original movie.

I'm not pulling a George Lucas and replacing the original or anything. ;)

While at it, you might wanna repaint the Mona Lisa, always thought it's terribly pale.

Seriously dude, if someone invests years of work an heart blood creating and realizing his vision, it becomes sth. like a baby to him (IIRC Noé actually said that about EtV).

Messing around with this *baby and spreading a mutilated version of it displays just a total lack of any respect, and I don't think that's a "snobbish" POV.

Well...I'm not really spreading it around. Besides, you don't even have to see it.

I don't see it as a lack of respect...if I didn't care anything about it I wouldn't have even bothered. But, thats where we differ I suppose.

And I'm not trying to repaint the Mona Lisa. I've seen tons of variations of the Mona Lisa(mostly in a comedic way, but still) and it doesn't take anything away from the original. Same with what I did. It's not like anything I did is going to take away or replace the original.

Well, passing it on by PM isn't really keeping it for yourself, either. You sure know how fast vids spread today with torrents and stuff. But you're right OC, I don't have to see it and so it's none of my business actually, just my 2cents.

I don't see it as a lack of respect...if I didn't care anything about it I wouldn't have even bothered. But, thats where we differ I suppose.

Point. Though, if it makes you feel better, of the few people who have asked to see it, only two people have ever messaged me back saying they watched it.

So aside from my IRL friends I don't think many people have seen it...

Well...let me say this(though this comparison might not quite work), I'm a part-time graphic designer(of sorts) and sometimes I have people ask me if they can take my work and use it a base for an idea they have. Sometimes they use it a jumping off point, sometimes they take it and tweak this or that. I'm always flattered when they do. I think it's cool when someone likes my work enough that they want to do something to make it their own.

Granted, filmmaking isn't anything like graphic design so my analogy might not quite work...but I think you get the gist of what I'm saying.

No disrespect intended, I just wanted to take something I saw and see what it might look like if it were a little different. I've seen lots and lots of Fan Edited movies, and they've always been fascinating to me. So, I thought I'd try my hand at it.

go for it bro... i watched it on fast forward, and i would have preferred the movie was only 50 mins or maybe try a 5 min cut ENTER THE SMALL VOID. peace

Already did it. Ended up being about 66 minutes. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
