It looks like that it is transitioning to a sci-fi, time travel, metaphysical plot as opposed to a straight mystery.

Agreed. Where did Baltasar go at the end? He showed Luna a magazine page and left. I think he may have discussed it in an earlier episode, but I can't remember.

I'm actually fine with the ending. They resolved what happened with the kids so if it gets canceled then you can at least feel like that was wrapped up, but they also left the potential for more to be explained.

It was getting good at the middle, then it was like they didn't know how to write a proper ending. The appearance of Emma and Noah in the painting was never properly explained.
