Why did roulet have to go to haller (McConaughey)?

I realise that going to haller, roulet put his lawyer in a bind, attorney client privilege, interesting movie yada yada.

Though, why did he have to go to haller, if he went to another lawyer to get him off, he would run free and no one would have known he was responsible for martinez' murder too.

The plot is obviously set up to play on attorney-client privilege. But like a lot of these kind of movies, when we get to the end the plot no longer makes sense.

Privilege doesn't work like that. It only applies to the preparation of a court case. As Haller was not defending Roulet over the other murder, and the confession did not occur in a legal interview, Haller could argue he wasn't bound by privilege.

In addition, lawyers can always walk away from clients, and that is exactly what Haller would do.

Maybe another lawyer would have gotten him off without noticing any similarities to the other case. But maybe not. That other lawyer would have had investigators too, and if he'd decided to look into his client's background there was a risk of him making the link to that other case. That would make him a variable Roulet couldn't control. By hiring Haller, he got a lawyer he thought he could control. If he doesn't make the connection, all well and good, if he does, he can't do anything about it and Roulet gets off anyway.
