BLUE RUIN or COLD IN JULY?-Which One Did You Like Better?

I loved them both- both great raw storytelling/film making. No CGI BS, no vampires/werewolves/no kids with special powers- just a great cast and an 80's feel all around. I would take a move like BR or CIJ ANY day over a mess like Transformers or Hercules(cartoons for adults and teen age kids). But that's just me- I know neither film I mention here made any money or will, and Transformers will make more $ in a week than both BR and CIJ combined will ever make, but that doesn't define a films greatness/lure to me. I have Cold In July at a 7/10 (really 7.5 but you can't vote .5s)and I would put Blue Ruin at 8/10- Thoughts?

Blue Ruin by a country mile.

hi McQueen- you didn't like Cold In July? Not at All?

reply

I liked it, performance wise. The story didn't hold up as much as the first act, imo.

I gotch ya- it was kinda like 2 different movies- I own every season of Dexter so I was bias going in- seeing Michael in a different role blew my mind- he'll always be Dexter to me- and I own Six Feet Under, every season- the dude is a very gifted actor

Being a family man, but going around and killing bad guys.
Not that much of a different role than Dexter :D

reply

I gotch ya- I just meant outside of his role as "Dexter" - after 8 years of seeing him as Dexter- it is odd to see him as anything else, that's all

reply

I am thinkig of this as a first Dexter movie. We don't know anything about Richard's past; it might as well be Dexter :D

reply

ha- great point lol + a mullet

Blue Ruin. I wanted to like Cold in july more but there were some story flaws or unexplained happenings that I couldn't forgive or get past. Was a good show though.

reply

I would say exact same scores as you, Blue Ruin is the tighter movie but CIJ had some great moments and a twisty if a little schizophrenic plot.

reply

Both really good films but I'm personally more partial to Cold In July

reply

nice- any particular reason? I luv it also- I luv em both

reply

Agree with what you said, couldn't have put it better, I love this sort of movie too and like you enjoyed both films, I would say that I favour Blue Ruin but only just.

It's not even a contest.... Blue Ruin.

The Dude: You're not wrong Walter. You're just an a*shole.

Cold in July - I feel it was better paced, had a really distinct visual style (although Blue Ruin was well shot as well), and dat soundtrack. Climax worked better as well. Not that Blue Ruin was bad - CiJ just left more of an impression.
