Sheriff didn’t have a gun?

In the scene inside the car (ie - blonde chick’s death), why didn’t she check the sheriff for a gun? I would think the sheriff would have a gun affixed to his belt. Blonde chick could have taken the gun and attempted to fire at Leatherface

I haven't seen the movie but it does sound like this is a plot hole

Another missed opportunity in this movie. Would've been better had she gotten out and there was an actual chase scene.
