Does anyone else hate how the story makes us like the people just because?

I mean, Don't get me wrong I liked the movie, but I noticed that

I suppose to like a guy who is being a complete a$$hole to everyone, brings a woman to his late wife event,gives alcohol to a minor, helps a kid lie to his mother and let the kid use a f$@king gun on him just because he is the main character and his wife ( whom he doesn't love much at least)

I suppose to like mother who brings a boyfriend ( who brings a gun to the house without hiding it), use illegal drugs in the house, let her son smoke( no way she doesn't know) and let a complete stranger whom she knows is unstable to spend time with her son, and when something bad happens, she questions it's because of her...... you don't say

I suppose to like a teenager who is a total d!@k because he has abandon issues and has identity crisis

on the other hand, I suppose to hate Karl because he got mad as a stranger came to his girlfriend's house ( and he lives there part time at least) for "customer service issue" at 11 Pm and then found him in the house with no one else around and not for not hiding his gun from a kid

I don't think you're necessarily supposed to "like" these deeply flawed characters. Hopefully you come to understand them. I think the film is fairly non-judgmental.

Everyone in this movie is deeeeply, deeeeply flawed indeed. No "good" characters were shown.

You liked the main character? I was turned off by him from the get go. I realize people deal with grief differently, but this was just stupid. When he went to his wife's event with that lady, I said "hey *beep* face, no one invited you here. *beep* off." The characters were just unlikable, and not in a good way, in a very bad "do I really want to keep watching this *beep* way. And I am not a fan of Jake's acting either, I feel like I've seen him play the same character in every one of his movies, so that might've been part of it as well.

Yours is the answer with which I agree most.

I thought I might be a small minority at best to notice Jake has about three facial expressions and plays only one character. I guess there's a market for that.

I found Davis' character objectionable too. So self absorbed in his grief he could not see he was hurting people around him, but it was satisfying to see him gain some self respect and enough self awareness to apologise for his actions.

I couldn't get where Naomi Watt's character was coming from. At least Davis had profound grief effecting his behaviour. She just seemed reckless and careless. Why on earth did she go with Davis to that memorial event? No self respecting woman would do that.

I actually liked all 3 main characters and the father in law. His character was how you'd expect him to react and pretty patient.

I feel what you are saying, but what you are talking about is called utopia. How things are suppose to happen and people are supposed to behave in an ideal and perfect world. The truth is that in the real world, the world we live in, sh*t happens. And people sometimes get their lives *beep* up. And they need to find a way to get over it, otherwise they lose themselves in oblivion and despair. In a perfect world, we would know how to deal super correctly with every single problem we face. But the truth is that we are very imperfect and complexe beings, and also pretty unique. So everyone has their own, more or less weird way of coping with difficulties. This one might not be an example to follow, but we already got disney movies for that. In the end,this is a story about tolerance and understanding and self-acceptance. If you ask me, this rather troublesome way of exposing the characters to us, that's what makes them real and makes us relate to them, have compassion for them. If this film was about some super decent, incredibily boring guy going through the lost of his wife, you would forget about it 5 min after.

I get your point. However, everyone in this movie is flawed and the directing of the movie wants us to sympathize with them and root for them while like you said the decent "boring people we tend to hate. My point is some movies try to make us like the bad guys and hate the pretty decent ones

Ok i see, but have you thought that maybe those decent boring people are wouldn't be so decent at all if the movie decided to focus on them instead of the main characters? What i mean is, maybe no one is really 100% decent, and this movie helps us explore people's flaws and how they help them grow and deal with problems in life. Because for instance,Carl was not extremely decent when he decided to beat up the main character. The father himself, although extremely correct most of the time, decided to do the standard, socially well accepted thing,and used the daughter's money to sponsor a scholarship for some privileged kid, as the movie subtly states. Instead of helping the disabled kids that his daughter really cared about. But the main character realizes this besides all the 'mistakes' he made, and in the end does something that, in my opinion, is even more meaningful than what the father did. The father reacted in the more socially acceptable way and made average progress, the main character lead his own way, and achieved something more beautiful. I don't really like most social standards,or at least the huge amount of importance that is given to them, because i believe they limit us and kill our potential. So i liked the moral of this film.

But don't take me wrong, i agree with you in some extent. These 'bad guys', why do we find ourselves sometimes rooting for them? It happens in real life also. I remember having a friend that liked me, that kind of almost 100% decent person we were talking about. But instead of this incredibly good person, i started dating someone not half as good. I sometimes come back to this story and try to understand why i made that decision,and the best reason i can find is that the second one was more interesting. That's the sad truth. And even sadder is realizing that, even if i came back to that moment, i would do the exact same thing. Even knowing how bad of a deal it is. I guess it's just human nature. We are fascinated by what we can't understand. At least most people are.

I agree with to some extent too.I just hate it when they try to force me to feel a certain way even though it's against all logic
