I really liked this film. Cooper Raiff stars, writes, and directs. Plays a sensitive, somewhat confused character that I found myself rooting for. Kind of a “Before Sunrise” movie about college. Took me back to those days; the conversations all had a sort of familiar feel. Good flick, this one.

I saw it this week. And yeah it was good. Natural dialog, real feelings. His newer movie 'Cha Cha Real Smooth' was also good, although a little more full fleshed of a story rather than this which was one long situation.

I'll check it out.

Cha Cha Real Smooth is a far better film overall. I like the story a lot more, and Raiff's Andrew is one of most likeable characters put to screen. Also his budding relationship with Dakota Johnson's Domino is far more touching. Also a lot of other characters in that film are far better written too. I think Shithouse loses it's way after the night they spend together and isn't as fun for me. But I did like the ending and what Raiff did with the Maggie character.

I dunno, I haven't seen it. But the description sounds like boy meets girl, not awkward college freshman needs a friend. Is that not what this is about?

reply

I wouldn't call it boy meets girl. It's more like boy tries to get his bearings.

Okay, just trying to get some idea before I watch it. From the description it sounds like a buddy movie (no homo). But the buddy is a girl.

Only recently seen Cooper Raif last two films back to back and I have to say I love what this guy is doing. He's only 26 too, very talented. He made this film at 23, and his way with dialogue is pretty damn great as he keeps pretty realistic and he's a strong actor too, plays the everyday guy pretty well. I think he's male version of Greta Gerwig in a way.

Although I preferred his second film Cha Cha Real Smooth with Dakota Johnson a lot more. His debut feature film is still pretty good. Raif has great chemistry with his leading ladies, he casts his films very well. Dylan Gelula, who I've seen in the disappointing The First Girl I Loved (2016) is a lot better in this film. Maggie isn't always likeable and you wonder why Alex would give her the time of day the way she treats him at times. But she actually grows as a person into someone you want to see Alex actually get with. Raif's Alex is a likeable guy, we can all connect with the loner who finds it hard at college to make friends. And I did get the "Before Sunrise" feels to this film, although it's only for first part of the film really, they don't spend a lot of time together after.

I like the ending as it's not overly Hollywood ending and rather more grounded ending. A very solid film 7/10.
