Wait a minute this is the future, where are all the Phaser Guns?

They have space travel. They have shields that dont actually block anything. Why no Assault Rifles or phased plasma rifles in the 40 watt range?

reply

Did you watch the movie??

The shield would stop any projectile/object moving over a certain speed (it's explained but poorly done). An due to the Holtzman effect (I think that was NOT explained in the movie) any energy weapon that would interact with the shield will goo boom (atomic boom).

reply

I did watch the movie. There was a throwaway line along the lines of a "slow knife goes through". I dont remember anything about projectiles. The shields certainly didnt stop falling bombs. Weapons of war usually progress with technology so it was funny to see them with energy shields but at the same time fighting each other with long knives.

reply

It's clearly stated that the doctor disabled the city shield, so the attack with bombs and ships was possible.

The knives could penetrate the shield if correctly used (the fatal blow had to be slower than the shield threshold) and you can see that in some of the fights. Poorly done in most of them.

reply

That was actually a plot hole. According to the novel, shooting an energy weapon to a shield would kill the shooter, the target and everyone around.

The logical consequence is that shields would be abandoned. Using a shield would make suicidal attacks extremely easy (you don't even need a bomb). You could shoot any political figure and kill the whole government. Not to say you wouldn't even need to go suicidal, you could just use One-Time Use Drones and let the shield do the boom.

reply

Yeah, with that I agree ...

Although maybe the energy guns were banned and no one allowed to build them.

I mean think about it: you could do the same with 2 drones controlled by you: one with a shield and placed in the right place and one with an energy weapon targeted at the first one.

reply

Ahh ok. Yeah i dont get why they bother with shields at all. They didnt stop knives or bombs.

reply

The solution is a projectile that counteracts it such as one that has a controlled speed burn, not going in with fucking knives.

The Hotlzman effect is pure bullshit by the way, it only exists because the writer had clearly no idea how lasers work.

reply

Controlled speed burn, good luck with that ...

Not quite, maybe he was thinking lasguns more like plasma guns, a la Ghostbusters.

Plus: a lot of SciFi is pure bullshit, like the force. Or dragons. Or whitewalkers. Did you ever say "GoT sucks because whitewalkers and dragons are bullshit".

Or about StarWars. Why do they use those impractical laser swords (or plasma) and wtf is the force anyway. Did you hate SW for those elements? Did you ask about SW "why swords"?

reply

Wouldnt work on plasmaguns like that either, but at least with continous plasma guns (good luck handling that temperature in a handheld weapon) you could have a blowback reaction in theory.

Force, dragons and whitewalkers are fantasy, not science fiction. GOT or star wars are not sci-fi, they are fantasy settings. At least in star wars the lightsavers (which are made out of photon manupulation and not lasers btw) have the benefit of being able to cut through literally anything. Force is magic.

reply

Was thinking that the lightsabers (nice typo btw, lol) are made of incandescent plasma contained in a magnetic field or something?

reply

Ha, nice typo indeed. im keeping it.

Hmm, wookiepedia says its plasma from a crystal. How unimaginative of George Lucas.

P.S. im waiting for someone to realize photon shields in something other than a novel. These things are crazy. Could theretically even withstand a black hole if you had enough power to keep it stable.

In the book it explains things better. "Lasguns" do exist and are used, however; if used against a shield, it causes a nuclear explosion that kills the Lasgun user and the person with the shield. The shield stops fast moving projectiles. Bullets and things like that are obsolete, this why hand to hand combat comes back. A slow moving blade will go through the shield. There is a battle in a prequel book where the Sarduakar actually would reach and turn someone's shield off and kill them, during the battle of IX. The Atreides base shield was disabled by Yueh in the book. In the book, The Baron actually had brought in old fashioned artillery for this battle, which otherwise, would have been useless and obsolete.

reply

Send in a drone with lasergun. Congratulations, you just eliminated your target and evernyone else in the room without having to put yourself in danger.

The only logical result of such detonations against lasers would be to abandon shield usage.

reply

And you destroyed the planet from which you need essential resources.

reply

No, you dont. These things dont have anywhere near enough power.

reply

Thinking machines and things like that are banned at this time. Due to fighting a war against AI thousands of years ago, all thinking machines are banned. If someone were to do something like that, all houses of the Landsraad would declare war on them. If someone manually flew a drone without AI and did that, the houses would unite against them. Any AI is outlawed during this time period. The known universe is almost like a futuristic society at this point. Also, they have mentats, which are basically human computers.

reply

You are going to be genociding entire nation with the city in it and any evidence of such machines existing would be destroyed in the explosive to begin with. Im pretty sure youll get away with it.

Fine, send in a suicide muslim instead of a drone.
