LOVED it.
sooooo intense. what did you think?
sharePhillipe acted as if he was the star of a show, a circus act essentially, he did in fact call himself a "star" within the film. It was like reliving his memory was like a little movie inside of his head.
share4th Question - The home videos of Phillipe practising on his own tight rope added to the body and story of the film. He was comfortable performing anywhere.
shareMan on Wire is very different from any fiction film. This is because of its documentary features such as interviews and archive footage to portray its message unlike other feature films.
Man on Wire is almost filmed as a performance because Phillipe's hobby is based off of performing. At some points when he is tightrope walking piano music is used by the editors to make out it as a performance.
Talking heads to away from the emotional response of the film. The whole film was edited in a non-linear way which would sometimes be off putting but also effective in the sense that it gives the impression of excitement and puzzling the story together just as the talking heads are doing as they tell the story to the audience.
shareI found the film to be quite different from a fiction film because the story is based on a real life event so the story had an element of reality to it because of this.
The best scenes of the film for me were when Philippe and his crew were hiding in the Twin Towers trying not to get caught. I also liked the build-up to the climax of the film but I found the climax to be more than disappointing. Unfortunately, there were only photos of him walking on the wire and no actual footage and therefore it didn't really add to the overall effect of the film.
Philippe is portrayed almost as a God in the film, with him doing these unimaginable things according to the majority of the public. Also, during the present time scenes when he is getting interviewed it feels a bit like he is putting on a show for the audience and it makes him look like an actor.
The documentary has an unmistakably documentary-like feeling with the overheads, montages and still images.
The 'My story is a fairy tale' also adds to the idea that Philippe is actually some sort of God rather than an actual person.
I guess there could be some different readings of the film because some people might have loved it but I have no idea why.
He had the dream for the twin towers from the very beginning so the movie had already gained itself an ultimate and what Phillipe claimed an impossible goal. The soft score allows the story to seem more fairy tale like as it's almost dream-like sounding.
shareI think many people would have an oppositional or negotiated reading because most people do not have the time or money to laze around tight roping and travelling all year round. The majority of the audience would have responsibilities.
shareI had a negotiated response as I had many outlooks with the story of the film. I identified with most of the emotional responses within the film however it could have been made more impactful and exciting whereas instead most of the characters seemed quite mutual when describing the experience other than philippe.
