Never seen a Boll movie, is he really that bad?

I havn't seen one good post about him. Surely he can't be that bad, can he?

reply

Yes. Yes he can.

reply

No, he can't.

Compare it with cars: Boll is building some Fiat, Dacia, Indian Tata or Hindustan or some kind of "Land Wind" chinese car. These are cars, they do have four wheels, a roof and an engine - and even with this sort of autos you can have quite fun riding them and they carry you to the place you want. Boll is not building Cadillacs, Porsches or Mercedes.

Yeah, I've been wondering the same thing. I mean, I love bad movies but I don't think he is the worst out there. I've never seen any of his movies yet. I guess I have to find it out for myself.

recent bad movies I've seen:
Death Race
Balls of Fury
Step Brothers
Moving McAllister
Drillbit Taylor
Brother Solomon
Loaded

Uwe Boll makes bad movies but compared to people like Ulli Lommel he's not that bad. Cut out the video game flashes and "Game Over" shots of House of The Dead and you've got an average B film. Same with Alone in The Dark. Cut out the scrolling intro, replace it with imagery and cut out numerous scenes with Tara Reid and you'e got again an average B film.

He's not as horrible as people make him out to be. And his online persona is amusing as hell.

reply

It depends really what you like.

I mean I think his movies are bad, but sometimes you want bad. Sometimes you do want to watch a film that's just action and over the top stuff.

I think he could be a good director, but he chooses an extremely hard genre, video game based films. The problem is that a lot of video games involve mostly gameplay. In other words there isn't much story or filler.

I haven't seen Farcry yet, but I hear it doesn't follow the game. Take a look at the film Doom. If it hadn't called itself Doom and used the game it would have been an average but good action flick. Instead it based itself on the game but also changed the story.

ill give him credit for alone in the dark goooooood b grade and it was tara and christian who made it work stephen dorff' s group was crap effort thou

He's quite interesting when he does the more serious stuff. He completely lacks any subtly as a filmmaker, but sometimes that works to his credit, especially when he's attempting political commentary. Seed, Tunnel Rats, Stoic and Rampage are all very good (kind of like the middle-ground between Lucio Fulci and Lars von Trier), however his videogame adaptation usually fall short. House of the Dead is easily his worst film, and almost justifies his reputation. Some of the other films are just rather cheap and mediocre; certainly not as bad as Sci-Fi channel/Zone Horror type stuff, but clearly at the middle of the B-movie spectrum.

He should probably stick to the more serious and provocative movies and give up on his dreams of being a successful genre filmmaker.

He is like Ed Wood. He's terrible at what he does, but thinks his movies are great. And he will fight people who think otherwise. Literally. He's boxed (and punched the living crap out of) his critics.

That being said, his movies are some of the most interesting movies i've ever seen. Not "good" by any stretch of the word, but interesting. Because they're so bad. Like watching an Ed Wood film. Plan 9 from Outer Space is still the worst movie ever made, aesthetically speaking... but who doesn't enjoy watching it for that particular reason? That's the way I feel about Uwe Boll's films.

Try watching In The Name Of The King with Jason Statham and Ron Perlman.

The dialogue between those two will make you wanna slam your head against a wall to get through it.

I can't seem to be able to finish it, and its the only Uwe Boll I have come into contact with.

Recommend delousing (because its not all hype, any one movie from this guy might give you the need to tear his ass apart online or in a crowded room)

But then again "Stop or my mom will shoot" was a favorite comedy of mine when i was growing up lol.

Comparing Ed Wood with Uwe Boll = Blasphemy!

I'm going to try and be diplomatic about Ewwy,

While many of his films do suck ass, the reason no one like him is because he takes decent Video Game properties, ones that could make decent films if done properly, and then pisses all over them in the eyes of the Video Game Community. Bloodrayne, if it had no ties to a game, would have been ok, but compared to the source material, he f'ed up the story like you wouldn't believe, he actually combined what little plot he took of the two games, The character of Rayne in the games was sultry, sarcastic and witty, besides bad-ass. Kristianna Loken played her as stiff, shy, quite and not bad-ass until the last 15 minutes. Then the sequel was worse then the first.

Within the gaming community, if you hear that Ewwy is doing a movie based on something, chances are it will be garbage. because he takes the idea and concept, but because he is a very, VERY arrogant person, who thinks he is God's gift to cinema (I swear to you this is true, he's practically said so in interviews) he manipulates and twists and changes the idea to fit what HE wants and damn anyone who diagrees.

Sorry, two's company, and three's an adult movie.

no, it's just an internet meme. The opinions stated on Boll related boards are completely worthless. Just ignore them.

IMO, the guy is way over-hated, more than he deserves.

THE GOOD

-House of the Dead: Fun B-movie, all I can really say. Not great or even good, but enjoyable.
-Far Cry: Underated, I actually really liked this movie, IMO his best.
-Bloodrayne 1 & 2: Liked the games, and the two movies are guilty pleasures of mine, I liked them alot. Looking forward to part 3.

THE BAD

-All Boll Movies: They all have that made for TV look, even the big budget ones, with rather lame special effects.
-All Boll Movies: Mis-casting, he seems to go for well known actors for roles that just don't fit them
-Alone in the Dark: Fan of the videogames, but this movie is one of the worst I've ever seen, period. Wanted to like it , but it flat out sucked. Big time.
-In the Name of the King: Even with an extremely star studded cast, this movie was just... I didn't hate it, but the guy tried to do LOTR and it just didn't work (nor could it. LOTR books are classic). Not even one of my favorite actors (Ray Liotta) could save it.

So thats just my opinion. He isn't the best director, but he isn't as bad as everyone says. I just think it's the cool thing, to hate the guy.

No, not by a long shot.

Sure, he's made a couple of thunderingly bad films (House of the Dead, Alone in the Dark, Postal), and a bunch of mediocre ones (Bloodrayne 1&2, In the Name of the King, Far Cry), but he's honestly not the worst director ever. As some of the above posters have said, his reputation mostly stems from outraged gamers who seem fairly oblivious to the fact that practically no-one has made a good game-based movie to date (though I did enjoy Prince of Persia).

Tunnel Rats is actually a good film, essentially a horror film with a war setting. It's tense and nihlistic and well-made. Heart of America, though flawed, is worth seeing as well. I do agree that he makes some bizarre casting choices - Burt Reynolds in ITNOTK, Tara Reid in AITD - but he's not the first director to do that. I personally find Michael Bay and any number of rom-com hacks far more objectionable.
