That staged family was a bit ridiculous...

Interracial parents with, I assume, adopted kids or kids from a previous marriage. It happens, but why the distraction?

More IMPORTANTLY those are laughably horrendous parenting skills. A preteen defies parents and gets their phone during supper -- parents just ignore it. Tell me this does not really happen! In my family such an act of defiance, and phone would be gone for a month MINIMUM.

I think the dramatization of the points (played out by that family and to a lesser extent the AI scenes) took away from the more serious and polished tone of the documentary. Gave it a feel of pushing an agenda, rather than just presenting some important facts. That's unfortunate because the interviews were great.

I also didn't understand why the Skyler Gisondo character was literally just staring into space when he didn't have his phone.

He couldn't have picked up a book or something? Or at least watched freaking TV??

Or used the computer instead. Social media is there too.

I have actually encountered people who don't have a computer at home and all they have for internet is their phone, so I'll let that one slide.

I find it hard to believe that there was absolutely NOTHING he could do instead, though.

Exactly! I had the same reaction when the tween daughter smashed open the kitchen safe and the mom just sighed and the dad was like, "Do you want me to talk to her?" She smashed it with a hammer! Most parents would've reacted immediately, probably with some very colorful language. If they'd cut the staged family, they would've had more time for the quality interviews.

Considering how liberals raise there kids these days, I don't doubt such situations like these happen or can happen. We already seen enough dumb things from trend and other social media platforms where you can record video for likes and money. Kids this generation and maybe before as well are the no respect for parents/teacher/older people. There are parents called helicopter/bulldozer parents that push all obstacles away for the child so they're always in a 'safe space', away from reality until they hit reality where they just scream, chide, throw a fit until they get what they want.

Why is a mixed family distracting ?

reply

Because its rare to have three different races in the same family. Its like if one of them was 7 feet tall or the kids were identical triplets. It got my attention and I started thinking that maybe social media was the least interesting thing about this family.

reply

Okay. That's quite reasonable.

i thought the "dramatization" portion of this doc was the weakest part..

just show me the interviews goddam

reply

totally agree, really dumb

The whole thing think seemed ridiculous.

I got the vibe that some geeks felt guilty for what they had been a part of and were trying to make themselves feel better. The poor babies. Pardon me, the incredibly rich babies.

Sorry guys and gals, you can't untaint your soul for what you've done.

The silly scenes with the family together split the tone when compared to the heavy, startling interviews. I did find the scenes with the family members alone that show the impacts of social media like the youngest daughter crying into the mirror fit in better with the doc as a whole.
