This movie HAD something original

I've read the topics in this movie's board and the complaints are the usual, the ones in every rom-com board - predictability etc., which is of course absolutely true and even the point of romantic comedies in the first place.

What was to me a step forward from the average romcom though was this: the point, that nobody really had to change. In all the other movies of this type, the women get a full make-over, change personality and then the guy falls in love with them. The men stop being idiots (although IMO they rarely are, they just somehow always need to apologize in the end for something apparently stupid they apparently did) and become sweet and adorable and monogamous.

However, what pleasantly surprised me in The Ugly Truth, was that they didn't change the original motto or the actors. The ugly truth is still there in the conclusion of the story - the guys prefer to look at and have sex with women who they deem hot. Even though Abby looked more stuck-up before the make-over, he liked her from the beginning. He liked to see her in sexier outfits, but in the end, he did fall in love with the annoying character. Also, he didn't change. In the end, he was still with his mind full-on sex, he was still into hot women and he was still charming, just as he was in the beginning, only that Abby was so repulsed by his theory that she didn't want to see his positive sides.

You have a very good point that I didn't when I saw it but what I liked about this rom com is that it genuinely made me laugh out loud and I'm glad that it was raunchy but without getting to the point of being gross.

I loved this movie and I'm not fan of neither of the actors and they had ver good chemistry.
This is one of my favorite rom Coms in recent years.

there is much more truth in this movie than people will admit.The truth is not in the Butler's character simplistic theories about men,but in Heigl's character habit of making lists of qualities about ideal men.
As stupid as it sounds,there are MANY professional women out there who do that and think like that,and i've met some.Unlike what movies and books try to teach people ,many women are not hopeless romantics but very practical people,more practical than men.

Pretty fun as far as romantic comedies go. Well-paced, fun dialogue and good chemistry.

that is so true, it is all abt the list of qualities
it goes both ways, for men and women too
they both have a list of an ideal partner
I really liked the message of that movie, the idea of the list that gets them into relationships with a list of qualities no matter what suits them they r only looking among that list only.

yep u r right, but I kind think she changed her ideas
the list he mentioned in the movie, a doctor good looking etc...
he also changed his idea of not wanting to fall in love again
it is not the personality that was changed, it was actually the mentality and things they wanted in their partner or the type of relationship itself

That's true, you have a good point. And again, this is why this movie had that "extra something". I find it really good that the message they were trying to portray is that "you can fall in love again" and that "you should expand your horizons and not just date a list" instead of just solving everything with a complete visual and personality make-over.

They actually both changed in the end though. Abby dropped her exacting list of requirements for "the perfect mate" and Mike admitted to feeling more than sexual desire for her. They sort of met in the middle.
