Best Anti-Racism Movie of all time (Sort of)

This movie is great, and not everyone understands the reason.
The mind blowing part of the movie was undoubtedly that the Prawns were the victims, not humans.
It really makes you feel bad for being a human, in 2 ways

First, and most obvious one, is that we actually don't care. Blomkamp stated It clearly, by showing the sympathy for Wikus, and the Prawns, as both were used just for people to claim power.
In Fact the hunger for power is a basic characteristic of almost all humans in both lead and supportive roles

The second plays with the viewers mind. Blomkamp here gives you a ton of disgusting beings , and makes every man feel superior to them. In fact, until the middle of the film you don't even pity them. After the ending of the movie you really understand what happend. The director managed to turn you in a racist, just with a few shots, and after that, he bombs you with philosophical questions

This is cinema. This is Art

I totally agree
I felt really bad for the prawns here. Humans suck

reply

Feeling bad for fictional characters does nothing. Try feeling for the humans.

A movie shot on poverty stricken Africa, With a message right in your face, And whites feel bad for the "Aliens" in the film and leave the theater more anti-black than they did before they entered. LMAO!

Yes, and Justin Bieber is the best musician of all time.

Enemy Mine, Alien Nation did it before and better than this. Back to your Mt. Dew, Doritos and Xbox kid.

reply

Eh? The prawns are shown to be equal to vermin in their behavior, except for their ruling class. They are violent and disgusting without their leaders.

How exactly is that an "anti-racist" message?

The Wild Bunch is here

reply

i wouldn't call it a good anti-racism movie. but we didn't really see much of their ruling class, and put in such bad conditions I think any living being would act uncivilized.

if there's a single person out there who didn't figure out "what it all meant" then it's probably someone who's also not allowed to cross the street w/o supervision.

Have you watched any movies prior to 2000? Did you watch this on your Xbox Live account or something?

Enemy Mine and Alien Nation handled the issue of racism in sci-fi much better, but it was force fed to a dumbed down generation.

reply

No they didn't, you stupid old *beep*

I saw the irony or the message that they were trying to get across. The aliens were put in slums and were called derogatory names 'prawns' and NOW all races and colors are oppressing and looking down on them like during apartheid. The formerly oppressed are now united with their former oppressors and oppress and discriminate against others. Just like in Alien Nation. There is a scene that I think of from the Alien Nation TV-series where people of all races and colors are protesting and wanting the 'inferior' new-comers to 'go home'. The irony of it all!!!

reply

Alien Nation is so cringy.

Yes, friends, governments in capitalist society are but committees of the rich to manage the affairs

reply

Agreed and very well put. I really enjoyed this films sociological views and or premise as much as enjoyed the overall entertainment value. Bravo!!

reply

Ernest and Celestine ponders the topic as well, which is very surprising given that it's targeted towards children.

i feel really, really bad for you if you think district 9 is the best "anti racism movie of all time."

go watch in the heat of the night, mississippi burning, or eyes on the prize.

reply

I was about to say mississippi burning is an actual anti racism film. The OP is way off it's not racism the prawns are a different species you can't be racist against a cat or a polar bear. If anything the movie is about how companies and the rich/top 1% don't care about anyone or anything other than making themselves money.
