Watching it now on Netflix (it's on Netflix for anyone thinking of getting Netflix) and honestly, I don't think it's that bad of a movie (Especially like the friendship between Ian and Lance, and Seth Greens character was cool as hell.) but yeah.
It has it's flaws sure, including the ending of the Rex character as this topic is about, but hey. Tbh, judging by how that reveal was set up it's pretty easy to just look at that as a non cannon goofy deleted scene that the filmmakers left in to send us home laughing.
So yeah, I choose to look at Rex's real ending as him riding off back home on that motorcycle and allowing his lil bro to take the car. I like that he gained respect for Ian after everything. Pretty cool brother at the end.
