Todd Phillips totally misjudged the fact that when you make a film to subvert audience expectations (like The Last Jedi or the final season of Game of Thrones) there will be huge backlash now thanks to how quickly word of mouth can spread online.
Instead of making a natural continuation of the character from the first film we had this uninteresting, contrived, expectation-subverting borefest.
Subverting expectations is the worst storytelling technique, it’s not clever and just pisses off your audience that paid to see your movie because you’re basically trolling them.
Thankfully Todd Phillips has had his own expectations subverted as his movie has been rightfully panned by critics and audiences alike and bombed at the box office. He somehow managed to make a worse sequel than his own The Hangover Part 3 and I won’t go see any of his future films, anyone that trolls their audience is not someone I want to support.
