Joker might suffer huge 2nd week drop

https://www.indiewire.com/news/box-office/joker-disaster-could-set-box-office-record-for-second-weekend-drop-1235054958/

This article says the movie is heading for a total of $70 domestic and $200 worldwide

The reason is the movie won’t have legs, based on what we’ve seen so far. After $7 million on previews last Thursday, the studio downgraded their expectations to $40 mil (which was overestimating by $3 million). On Monday, the movie grossed about $1.8 million, and usually, movies on their first Monday gross about 8% their opening weekend gross, not 5%. Joker is likely to be 3rd this upcoming weekend behind Wild Robot and Terrifier

Worse case scenario, which isn’t impossible, is that Joker draws under $7.5 million to set a record low drop. More possible, the film draws about $11-12 million for a 70%-ish drop in its 2nd week

reply

70% wouldn't even be close to the record

156 films have dropped that much, or more

reply

$11-12 million in this next weekend would be about 70% drop

If Joker draws a little under $7.5 million (unlikely but actually not impossible), they’d match or come near a record-low 80% drop

reply

not really, as 23 films have hit 80 or more

just curious, where are you getting that 7.5 number from?

reply

It’s in the article in OP, which also says:

“For films that opened over $20 million, that record is currently held by “Friday the 13th,” which dropped 80 percent in 2009 ($40.6 million to $7.9 million) and “Halloween” in 2022 ($40.0 million to $8 million; it was also streaming on Peacock).”

nah, i'm looking at the real list

A lot of the movies in that list didn’t get widespread theatrical releases , and when movies draw like 800k in its first week, a lot of theaters just stop playing them. I think that’s why the article made sense to qualify the record for “ films that opened over $20 million”

I could see this setting the record for 2nd wkend drop for a comic book film like an 80% drop (the current record holder is The Marvels with 78% drop - 46m to 10m)

reply

Might? All the signs are pointing to this thing dropping off a cliff. I predict a 70% drop

reply

Joker 2's performance reminds me of Ang Lee's Hulk back in 2003... which also fell off a cliff in its second weekend... I think Joker is going to be even worse though.
