Lands On Three-Week Tracking With U.S. $70M+ Opening

Even if it grosses 2/3 of Joker 1, that's $500m.

The studio, similar to what they did with the original 2019 movie, Joker, took the pic to the Venice Film Festival for a world premiere, however, critical reviews came back at 62% fresh. By the way, before we rush to judgement, the 2019 movie came away from its Venice and TIFF premiere 62% fresh with critics at the same point in time growing to 69%.

We hear the sequel is exactly what Phillips set out to make: a movie with musical elements. The question is whether the fans of the $1.1 billion grossing global movie want to see Arthur Fleck and Harley Quinn (here played by Lady Gaga) singing their character’s personal favorite hits. It does look wonderfully edgy.

Still, even at a $70M+ start, which would be $26M less than Joker‘s opening of $96.2M, that’s nothing to be ashamed of, and would rep arguably a record start for a live-feature musical that’s not a Disney movie (November 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody opened to $51M). At $70M, Joker 2 would be the seventh highest opening for a movie of all-time at the October domestic B.O. When the first Joker first played, it was so grim and serious in its tone (so not a willy nilly DC comic book movie) that there were fears that copycat crimes would be spurred from the feature, particularly post 2012’s Dark Knight Rises, and that people would be scared to attend. That did not happen, with Joker ultimately minting $335.4M domestic, $743.3M overseas. BTW, Gaga’s biggest opening belongs to her ultimate Oscar winner, A Star Is Born, also a Warner Bros movie, which debuted to $42.9M during the first weekend of October and legged out to $215.3M.

The budget for this movie is nearly 4x the budget for the 2019 movie, so comparisons mean nothing. The 2019 movie's budget was just $55 million, but the budget for this one is a massive $200 million . This movie probably needs at least $450-500 million to get a profit

I hope this movie doesn't succeed at the box office. Let's end Lady Gaga's acting career

Like I said, $500m. Man babies crying.

This article says pre-sales are tracking more like The Flash and John Wick 4, which puts the movie in the range of about $300-450 million. $500 million isn't guaranteed. It also looks like they're projecting only $168 million domestically, so a lot of the profit is supposed to come from international sales, which doesn't always bring back money to the studios

The real question is what is the actual budget on this thing. Todd Phillips says it's more than the first movie, but not $200 million as it's been reported.

Tracking is now showing $55-65 million. Sounds like the musical aspect along with mixed reviews is really coming back to bite them in the ass.

I'm limited to my anecdotal experience, but I think the decison to make this movie a musical is the big issue. Every time I see people talking about this movie, the sentiment is always, "Who wants to see a musical." What's worse is that I see people only just now realizing that this movie is a musical (i.e. they didn't know). As more people begin to learn that this movie is a musical, the projections may drop a little more

reply

I think they were banking on it being a Joker sequel would attract enough of an audience who wouldn't care about being a musical. Clearly, that appears not to be the case now and the mixed reviews aren't helping.

This is the perfect example of a time a studio shouldn't have given a director so much artistic control over a film. They did and now they've turned a sequel to a billion dollar hit into something that isn't accessible to a general audience.

Global opening of $140M would result in around $420M gross.

Flash opened with $139 million worldwide, and Indiana Jones 5 opened with about the same. Neither got over $400 million . Joker is tracking about the same as both of those movies were
