To the Americans and Brits here ...

I was just wondering if the title "Morning Glory" also has a nasty second meaning to you as a mother tongue?

To me it sounds like something, men have very often in the morning when the wake up.

By the way: The film was terrific!

reply

Yeah lol I did think it was abit of an odd name for a film!

"I'll stab you with the sharpest knife I can grab, come back the next week and re-open your scab"

reply

Yes it means something that a man might find when he wakes up in the morning!

sadly well not really but ford doesnt have that option any more ;) lol

reply

yep, a boner

reply

Oh wow, good spot. D'ya think they called it Morning Glory by accident?

reply

I've never heard it called that.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

I think it's an English phrase.

reply

It makes more sense in the context of the publicity posters that accompanied the release. They say "What's the story, Morning Glory", a reference to a line from the Telephone Song in "Bye Bye Birdie." A bit obscure to others outside of musical theatre buffs, but I made an association to a movie revolving are journalists and news programs right away.

reply

Exactly.

What's the story = appropriate for a news show.
Morning Glory = it's a morning show.

I've got Morning Glory flowers in my garden too. I hate the darned things.

reply

No. It's a line from an old Anne Margaret movie that has nothing to do with an erection. However, it might mean anything in England. They like randomly assigning unintuitive meanings to nonsense rhymes.

Well don't you sound like a douchenozzle.

It is common slang for Nocturnal penile tumescence, I assume they knew this when naming the film, only people who live in a cave or have never ventured out of their own town would be unaware.

Here in America we say "morning wood" to describe an erection a man wakes up with. Never heard it called "morning glory."

But a morning glory is also a flower that opens in the morning and closes later in the day. Since the movie is about morning news programs, it could be a reference to that. Not to mention that Rachel McAdam's character finds glory in a morning news show. Just a thought.

reply

Better than the original title, MORNING GLORYHOLE.

I have a new philosophy. I'm only going to dread one day at a time.

reply

LOL. My soup was still in its bowl before I read your comment. Now there's soup everywhere...

"What's the story morning glory" is the name of an Oasis album too. (from 1995)

That's what I initially thought of and assumed it was referencing, haha. Either that, or the flowers.
People sure can make a double entendre out of anything.

reply

In Britain its meaningless apart from the Oasis album.

Its that man again!!

reply

I'm English, it is used for an erection on waking.

Only those with no valid argument pick holes in people's spelling and grammar.

reply

Morning wood is the American term. Morning glory sounds like it would have something to do with sex, not an erection. Unless you can't get it up, then yes,I guess it would be glorious.

Morning glory is a plant. It can be used to make hallucinogenics, but I'm sure they used the title as a play on words (as shown in the poster "What's the Story" Morning Glory, (story=news) and like the other poster stated something to do with the flower opening in the morning (McAdams would be the flower).

If we don't believe in freedom of expression for people we despise, we don't believe in it at all

reply

In the US, we call that "morning wood".. "Morning glory" is used to describe some one who is a "morning person" (one who is awake and energetic early in the day).. the title of the movie is referring to the lead character's personality.
