It was like watching her doing an impression of Jennifer Garner doing an impression of Meg Ryan. The movie was funny, the whole supporting cast was delightful. She single handidly tanked it. I've never seen such an annoying unlikeable performance.
"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"
She carried the whole movie and was a revelation, shame too late for an oscar nod really..this will send her career soaring. "all dressed up and no-one to blow"
The character was annoying most of the time, but I liked the film despite that. I wish they would have had a bit more of Diane Keaton and Harrison Ford's characters bickering though.
I sort of agree with you. I think it had to do with the character's personality she was trying to portray too. I found Becky to be socially and personably very annoying - don't know how Patrick Wilson was so intensely attracted to her enough to start a relationship! Rachel McAdams is one of my favorite actresses, I always watch her movies and I have enjoyed watching her performance in every movie except this one.
I agree with the OP but I couldn't work out if it was the actress' performance or the character. The character was woefully unlikeable to the point where the movie would have been at least five times better had she been less irritating. I saw the movie with a group of friends and she annoyed ALL of us. If that was the point, then she did well, but the movie would have done better without it.
Rachel was GREAT in this.A classy and dynamic performance reminicent of old Hollywood classic screwball actresses like C.Lombard,R.Russel and B.Stanwyck. I also agree that Rachel is way underated.I guess one has to overact these days to get an oscar nomination but i'm glad Rachel stays true to her art, even if her understated style may not get her as easily nominated.

I gotta say, I'm not really seeing it (at all) how the character could be called annoying. Besides saying she's annoying both you and the OP didn't really elaborate a whole lot.

Fair enough. I will accept your invitation and elaborate. :)
She seemed to be trying very, very hard to be that "cute", hyperactive, "crazy" girl. But she was over the top - hyperactive to the point that it just seemed weird, flailing hand movements were completely unnecessary and silly half the time and generally over the top the rest of the time (I mean a wide grin, wide eyes along with huge hand movements is enough but she has lift a leg off the ground too? Oh God).
I understand the character was supposed to be very energetic - this type of highly ambitious person (especially a woman) really has to be. Hyperactivity isn't something to be ashamed of but along with the voice, fake laughter, flighty ridiculous movements and non-stop chatter, flicking the hair out of the way and throwing herself into things, all that combined got very annoying.
The too-wide constant smile to me looked fake because it was forced and used so often when it wasn't appropriate to be grinning like an idiot.
Also, I did like her hair, but was it necessary for her to be playing with it so much, puffing it out of her face like a school girl? I didn't think so.
Anyway, I did enjoy the movie, loved the soundtrack, and I think she is a pretty lady, but I really think this character could have been so much more likeable if she was just less unnecessarily hyperactive and try-hard. :)
However, I can see what I thought they were trying to do but personally it didn't hit the mark for me.
Rachel carried this film! And if you look at the reviews the majority are praising her performance in Morning Glory and saying she was the best part of this film. I thought she absolutely shined in this role! She is wonderful at comedy and drama.
