How Many Other Straight Males Secretly Enjoyed this Movie?

I have to say I was dragged to see BURLESQUE and surprisingly found it enjoyable and sexy...I guess it was a guilty pleasure. I never thought Christina Aguilera was that attractive but she looked smokin' hot in this movie..in the beginning of the movie, at least, before all the make up and wigs.

reply

The only thing I enjoyed about it was Kristen Bell in a catsuit. Everything else was just not for me.

reply

That's why I watched it.

reply

I went for the singing and wasn't disappointed. As for the scenery, too much playing dress-up for me, but I enjoyed the movie.

Whats to be ashamed of? Burlesque houses used to be where the more sophisticated straight men went instead of a regular ol' whorehouse.

People have this odd need to think the film is only for gay men.
There is more to film than sex;the human-condition/ character-interaction come in all forms of films, whether a musical or a western.

"People have this odd need to think this film is only for gay men"

As a gay man I disagree. I told str8 male friends I was seeing this and they thought I was crazy. As one said, "It's just gonna be boobies, bobbies, BOOBIES" LOL True--there WAS tons of female flesh but I liked it for the music and dancing. Gigandet does have a brief nude scene but that's hardly enough to drive gay guys into the theatre. This is for anyone (gay OR str8) who enjoys musicals. And no--not all gay guys love musicals.

reply

And not all straight men dislike musicals. I'm straight (at least I think so, after 63 years) and I thought this looked like the modern version of Cabaret, very refreshing. And I now love Christine A.

Tension, apprehension, and dissension have begun.

reply

LOL True true--some str8 guys love musicals. No offense but I don't think this is even close to "Cabaret". That was a very good but dark and very adult musical. "Burlesque" is simple-minded, treats sex in a squeaky clean way, has a ridiculously obvious plot and some truly bad acting. BUT all the music and dancing were great and Cam Gigandet (or whatever his last name is) was easy on the eyes.

reply

Whose acting was so bad?

reply

Christine A's was the worst. She was GREAT singing and dancing but acting--forget it. Cher also was bad--she's had one face lift too many. NO expression ever showed on her face. Cam Gigandet is a good actor but he has nothing to work with here. He always has this silly smirk on his face or has to look adoringly at Christine (not that that's hard to do). Remember--I DID like the movie for the singing and dancing.

reply

Different strokes. I thought the acting was as solid or credible as any other musical released of late including Dreamgirls, Chicago and anything else.

reply

I'm a straight male, and I openly enjoyed this movie... nothing "secret" about it!

Musical films are in short supply these days. In this century, I can think of Chicago (2002), The Producers (2005), Dreamgirls (2006), Hairspray (2007), and Burlesque (2010). Did I forget any?

Anyway, Chicago won the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year, so it automatically is the best musical. Second best? I think Burlesque should take that award.

Burlesque is a lot classier than some of its detractors here will admit. For one thing, Cher is fully in character as Tess, owner of the failing Burlesque lounge. She wears her disappointment in the business, and her love of the burlesque acts on stage, equally well. And Stanley Tucci, as her gay assistant, nearly steals the show, playing almost the same character he did in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), where he played gay assistant to Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly. He's got the role down pat.

Christina Aguilera is perfectly suited to the part of Ali (short for Alice), the small-town girl who makes it to the bright lights of Hollywood and becomes a star through her singing and dancing talents. We don't get to hear her sing until about two-thirds of the way through, but when we do... Wow! She's got pipes that could make any blues singer proud!

Cam Gigandet, as Jack the bartender, presents an enigma to the casual viewer. At first, we (and Ali) have him pegged as gay, because he wears eyeliner at work. But it turns out he's straight, and not only that, he has a fiancée. This turns out to be more than a passing annoyance, because now he and Ali have fallen in love with each other... at least, that's the way I interpret it.

First, though, there is the dicey business of saving Tess' pride and joy, the Burlesque Lounge, from its creditors. The screenwriters come up with a novel plan for doing that, a device I've never seen used in the movies before. It could even be called brilliant.

Oops, looks like my oral diarrhea has spread to my keyboard. Okay, I'll stop now. But, as you asked, I'm straight, and I very much enjoyed Burlesque.

Cheers,
Dan

I dont see why it's a "guilty pleasure" or why men would have to secretly enjoy it....It's a bunch of WOMEN who are DANCING for chrissakes...what could be more naturally arousing for a man than that??

I dont really understand men sometimes....I thought it would be natural for them to enjoy this movie! :D

I AM DINOSAUR...RAR!!!

I enjoyed the movie simply because of the girls. Especially Christina.

I'm a straight guy and was entertained enough by it to give it 6/10. Christina Aguilera was smokin' hot.

It was pretty good, but could have did without the love story though. Also, it wish it had more dancing/singing scenes with Kristen Bell. 6/10

I was satisfied with it, especially since I didn't expect much at all.

Christina Aguilera still looked real hot (this was only last year, and between then and her disaster at the Super Bowl, what happened, where did all that extra poundage come from so suddenly?)

Cher is a legend and it's nice to see her back in a movie. Last one I saw was Moonstruck which was like 25 years ago. Maybe her presence here is what makes people think this movie is for gays (?!)

Stanley Tucci is always good in his roles. Kirsten Bell easy on the eyes.

But it's Aguilera's show and she sure has a terrific set of pipes. I'm one of the many males who originally liked seeing sexy Britney Spears music videos around the 2000-2003 period, and ignored Aguilera's clear superiority as a singer, without looking bad herself.

But since then, I've realized (like many others too) that she's truly a super performer. Despite their history of troubles, she and Britney are much more appealing for me than Lady Gaga (whom I would never pay to see if she ever appeared in a movie). And looking their best, they're smokin'.
