I'm a straight male, and I openly enjoyed this movie... nothing "secret" about it!
Musical films are in short supply these days. In this century, I can think of Chicago (2002), The Producers (2005), Dreamgirls (2006), Hairspray (2007), and Burlesque (2010). Did I forget any?
Anyway, Chicago won the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year, so it automatically is the best musical. Second best? I think Burlesque should take that award.
Burlesque is a lot classier than some of its detractors here will admit. For one thing, Cher is fully in character as Tess, owner of the failing Burlesque lounge. She wears her disappointment in the business, and her love of the burlesque acts on stage, equally well. And Stanley Tucci, as her gay assistant, nearly steals the show, playing almost the same character he did in The Devil Wears Prada (2006), where he played gay assistant to Meryl Streep's Miranda Priestly. He's got the role down pat.
Christina Aguilera is perfectly suited to the part of Ali (short for Alice), the small-town girl who makes it to the bright lights of Hollywood and becomes a star through her singing and dancing talents. We don't get to hear her sing until about two-thirds of the way through, but when we do... Wow! She's got pipes that could make any blues singer proud!
Cam Gigandet, as Jack the bartender, presents an enigma to the casual viewer. At first, we (and Ali) have him pegged as gay, because he wears eyeliner at work. But it turns out he's straight, and not only that, he has a fiancée. This turns out to be more than a passing annoyance, because now he and Ali have fallen in love with each other... at least, that's the way I interpret it.
First, though, there is the dicey business of saving Tess' pride and joy, the Burlesque Lounge, from its creditors. The screenwriters come up with a novel plan for doing that, a device I've never seen used in the movies before. It could even be called brilliant.
Oops, looks like my oral diarrhea has spread to my keyboard. Okay, I'll stop now. But, as you asked, I'm straight, and I very much enjoyed Burlesque.
Cheers,
Dan
