Can this movie be watched without having seen the others?
I've seen the others; but I haven't seen this one, and someone asked me whether this one makes sense on its own, which obviously I couldn't answer. Does it?

shareI wonder if anyone knows that
shareYes it can
shareIt's intended as a soft reboot. Like all 'requels', a remake-sequel.
It directly copies the original whilst also referencing it. It can operate on it's own but it's best to see the others before hand, in particular the first.
Watching the original then jumping to this one would work fine. It'll give more background to the 'legacy' characters. Though you can just watch this one without having seen the others, as many young cinema-goers did.
I thought it was a direct sequel ?
shareIt is...but it also introduces new main cast members (with the previous main cast having supporting roles) and rehashes several elements of the original. It's a 'requel'. A reboot/remake and sequel in one.
It's intended to operate both as a standalone and as a continuation.
I think it's best to watch it having seen the original so as to know whom the legacy characters are and to understand the references/nods to the first film.
But it tries it's best to work as an entry point into the franchise for younger, first time viewers.
Good to know, thanks π
