Newton abandons his family!?

Did anyone else think it strange that when Newton goes into the swamp he virtually abandon’s his family? His wife and son escape the confederates but he doesn’t try to see them, he doesn’t even try to contact them at all!

The next time they appear is when they search him out, would a loving father really behave in this way?

Had the director not telescoped events, the movie would have been 10 hours long.

This was in a middle of a war. Had the Confederates caught Newt the second time, they would have lynched him. The Confederates had destroyed his farm and stolen all his livestock (this wasn't obvious in the movie) so his family were destitute and left Mississippi to stay with family in Georgia. They would have had no way of contacting each other.

yes, that explains everything - thanks

I was very confused when his wife returned and they were all living like Sister Wives. What the hell was going on?

His wife made him leave. She clearly says "I can't take this anymore" as he leaves. That's why she seems a little ashamed and remorseful when she appears at the end and asks for help.

I don't remember it happening like this.

What I remember is he sees them but has to leave to protect them because he is wanted.

Due to he is wanted his family are having a terrible time also constantly being watched so they leave.

He returns to his old house and sees they have left collects a few items left behind.

Later on his family have moved far away he is a well known name and his families new home is destroyed force her to seek him out.

You could say why didn't he search for them well he didn't have a clue when or the place they had gone to plus he was wanted with a war going on as well this isnt like the modern day hop in your car it takes a long time to travel.

Remember this is over many years as well the movie makes it feel short time its not
