Baratheon Was a B!tch!

So much for swearing fealty to Rhaenyra. Her kid goes there & he’s like “SCREW YOU! You little punk, go & tell your mother where she can go.”

To think, she told him that he’d treated “warmly”

Do the books say what she & Daemon do to him as a result? Hope he gets his. “Oath” indeed.

This is why the Baratheon’s never were my favorite in the show.

The problem was that Aemond got there with Otto's generous terms first. Little Luke only had a message from Rhaenyra saying, presumably, remember your oath. Too little too late.

reply

Still a promise is a promise. Except in that world or ours.

reply

I think it was a promise made by his father so ...

He was depicted as illiterate and proud (not honorable like House Stark) in the show. So basically he would definitely favor male succession. Getting Aemond as son in law for his oldest daughter is just a too good of a deal.
Without Aemond, he might have even bowed, but still moved on as soon the marriage deal had come up. He would be otherwise the only one pro blacks in the south, so his people would suffer most from attacks from the greens without much support beside from sea side. It's just a logical solution, personal as for his people.

reply

"the only one pro blacks in the south"
lol yeah i see how that could be a problem

Sounds like he anticipated the reign of Jofferey, even if Joff was only a Bartheon in name

What I get from this show is that oath means noting in that world. Which is funny how everyone teased and
mocked poor Jamie Lannister for "breaking the oath". While in reality everyone breaks their oath at a glimpse.

All those Houses and lords do is betraying people they swore to serve. Even those knights of the Kingsguard. Rhaenyra was declared official heir. Which means they have to serve her the moment king died. Then usurpers declare another child as new king and they all go and serve usurper without any hesitation....

reply

I disagree to the extent that oaths mean something to some people and nothing to most others, just as in the real world.

reply

Stannis would have honored the oath of fealty to Rhaenyra.

reply

Agreed.

Not attempting to pick a fight or anything, but did you feel this way about Joffery in Game of Thrones?

In one case you have a hand of the King putting fourth a sladerous accusation. In the other you have a Queen of the King saying he confided to her on his death bed that he wanted to change his heir.

Now we of course have the inside information to all of the details cause we are wathcing the show, but to a few lords spread across the continent these 2 situations would look very similar I would suspect.
