Why didn't Viserys just..? (S1, E1 spoiler)
get married again? No heir for 9 years, but he could have tried again with a younger bride.
And he should have whacked Daemon. That dude is trouble. Not the good kind.

The same thought did cross my mind as well. But he recognized his unwillingness to name his daughter the heir to the throne and wanted to correct that mistake.
shareI think the idea was that he needed to name a heir because his wife died and in the eventuality that he dies/is assassinated.
I guess he would have had to name a heir anyway ...
The question would be: why didn't do it until now?
Because there was a law against it. Apparently in the end they decided to just ignore the law (or maybe change it, though we don't actually see this happen).
shareA law against having a female heir.
But they were hinting at Daemon as the default heir anyway ... so why was the need now to name the heir?
I mean, it can be just politics, as Daemon started to be more present in politics and they felt that he needs to be stopped.
Yeah it was politics. They are like 60+ years without a war, the longer they go without a clear line of succession, the more likely there will be factions formed that result in a civil war. Seems like that is gonna happen anyway on this show.
shareIt seems that the concern is that Viserys could die at any time, and if that happens, then Daemon would be the rightful heir and that simply is not acceptable to the powers that be. So they've chosen to circumvent the law and name Rhaenyra the rightful heir in an effort to avoid the dreaded scenario of being under the reign of the king's brother.
shareI think because he was convinced he would have a son, "a dream more vivid than memory".
Also probably has something to do with declining health and he had no intention to re-marry.
The hand did not want Daemon, but apparently also did not want young Rhaenyra. He sent his own daughter to the king, who could produce a male heir. But that also implied the king loved his wife, only now there is an opening to a new queen.
The king didn’t seem interested in the girl. But will see in the future ..
shareIt looks to me that is where things are going.
Rhaenyra seems to be homosexual and in love with Alicent, a male heir from Alicent would make things interesting, and threaten the position of Rhaenyra, who so far has no loyal followings. On the other hand Alicent's son would have the backing of the hand. That should create dramas. I am thinking season 2, maybe.
The fact Rhaenyra is homosexual could further undermine her position as heir (and make the story more relevant to mainstream or woke culture).
Daemon could also come out from woodwork anytime to create more dramas and conflicts. I am thinking those are the principle players in the story.
The fact Rhaenyra is homosexual...
"I saw no proof that Rhaenyra is a lesbian."
The two seemed to be a bit too close for just friends. BUT it might be just another "checkbox" - let's show that they might be lesbians so we can get some social points.
Maybe. But women can and do have very close platonic friendships with other women, much more so than men do. I doubt that Alicent is interested in Rhaenyra ( and vice-versa ) in that way but unless I'm mistaken Daemon wants to be the King with Rhaenyra for his wife/Queen big time.
Just re-watched the trailer.
I think I can predict what's going to happen ... and yes, you're right - she will be the next wife.
Will make a thread about it :D
I think he is going to. He did in the book.
shareQuestion was why didn't he get another wife during those 9 years you can't tell me the world of GoT is based on Christian Kings, polygamy was normal for Kings throughout history and according to what was established in the previous show and book polygamy was a norm with Targaryians.
Aegon the Conqueror had two wives. I don't know if the kings who followed him did the same.
shareI think Viserys in the show is sort of a good person who truly loved his wife.
He also seems to be weak(ish), easy to influence and ultimately might not be a good ruler. He is clearly happier making that city model.
Me guess in the next episode we are going to see various factions pushing him to marry and then the show will jump to the time of the main events. Or something.
Guessing that is the hope of The King’s Hand. He sent his pretty young daughter to the King’s bedchamber to “comfort him”. He probably wants the King to marry her and produce a son so his future grandson will be the heir. Guessing that might happen too, so the Targaryans will be torn apart by all the competing claims to the throne: Rhaenyra v. Queen-Denied v. Daemon v. King’s Hand grandchild v. all the other royal families in Westeros.
The King had no reason to remarry since the Queen was pregnant and he had such great faith in dreams, destiny and fate. He was so sure the baby was going to be a boy too, even holding a tournament in his honor before he was born. Looks like the King is not a very pragmatic guy.
Yes I had that question, “Did she? Or didn’t she?” Don’t believe she wanted to of course. Can you say “awkward?” But what do you think?
shareI think they didn’t have sex (yet) because the King was still grieving but it looks like they will eventually. Absolutely she doesn’t want to but she is a dutiful medieval daughter with no other choice but to obey her father. What is up with her nail biting?
shareI thought that too when Otto sent his daughter into the King’s chambers, she’s young, beautiful, ready for marriage, she could easily provide the king with an heir.
