would you have done what John Smith had done?

After watching this film, i wondered about the scene where John (Val Kilmer) talks about the reason he's in prison - wife/daughter raped and murdered, killing the families of the ones who did it. Would you have done the same?

Most people would of course quickly say no; but for me, i'd have to really wonder about it.
If two people really did that to your loved ones, i would definitely want some sort of revenge, make them suffer. Add to that, when it does happen, you would be in a totally different state of mind, not caring about any damn thing in the world and just wanting to do the same to the killers.
I wouldn't go as far as killing the family (certainly think about it), but who knows how crazy and delusional you could get when you reach that level of anger.

well overall i think it's obviously NO.

because the simple fact that taking out EVERYONE of that person's family who had nothing to do with it at all would obviously be wrong and just evil... getting the person(s) involved would not be a bad idea but to take out someones bloodline is just evil/sick etc etc.

i think most people would probably agree with that and have a generally similar reaction if they where in that situation because anyone who loses a family member to murder obviously wants the person who did it to die etc etc... it's a natural reaction.

but then again losing a wife & daughter would probably push you over the edge as the pain from that would probably make you lose your mind... because them just getting murdered would be bad enough but then to think they where raped first and suffered then died and then not only is it one person dead but BOTH of them would be unimaginable so i suppose in some cases could make you do things you would never otherwise do.

As he said in the end, I would wipe out the entire planet to get my family back if they were killed but of course it would be wrong, evil and completely sick. I would deserve to be tortured to death after that but it would all be worth it.

It's not that he thought the family members were responsible. He wanted the killers to feel the same sense of loss that he felt when his wife and kid were taken from him. Was it right? Well, no, probably not. But the idea behind it would be tempting.

reply

Except that the kind of people who commit crimes of that sort tend to be dissociative psychopaths who probably wouldn't much mind the loss of their families and might even consider the John had done them a personal favor - d'oh!

Welcome to Costco, I love you...

my hubby said if he came home and saw our boys and me killed like animals - he would've done the same thing john did - yeah his family was innocent as well, but it didn't stop those mother *beep* from basically raping and ripping their bones apart - john's little girl was seven years old.. so yeah my hubby said he would've done the same thing as well... val kilmer was awesome in this movie as was dorff...

I don't know. I hope I wouldn't, but sometimes lines can be crossed beyond the self control of a man. I dearly hope I won't ever have to face that decision ...

Personally I think anyone who would kill someone's family in order to make them suffer more before killing them is insane. You're killing people who have absolutely nothing to do with the crime just to inflict more pain on someone who IS responsible? What kind of fcked up logic is that?

If you really wanted to make them suffer more, why not just kidnap the guys, find a nice secluded place to stash them, and then start figuring out ways to torture them? You could stay out in some remote location for _days_ and work on them. No need to involve innocents.

reply

how innocent are the parents om someone who's able to rape and kill a child? people are rearly born f'ucked up

reply

The torture is physical suffering, his motives were all emotional/psychological. He knew how bad that felt, and clearly thought it would be the worst thing he can do. In addition, they two people probably had it worse, because they had the same horrible things happen, only they knew they were directly responsible for the suffering and death of their families. I don't think I can say I would do it for sure, but I can certainly see how someone could. It's not really that difficult to think of, "you rape and kill my family, I am going to rape and kill your family too."

reply

I liked his logic anyhow...

"I am Jack's cold sweat."

reply

Would I do it in his position? Most likely. I would have naught to live for. I would fear nothing, not death, nor consequences, nor pain. Hell, I would welcome pain, it would remind me of my former humanity, for all I would feel would be numbess. I would welome death, to remove my pathetic existence of uselessness. Death, like most good things, comes last. Death is the true and only last... Life's a bitch like that, isn't it?

I can just hear John Smith's voice in my head, repeating those words. It's how I beleve I would feel afterword if that would happen to me, God forbid.

twas something i really liked about this film. usually it would just be that he'd murdered the guys who did the deed in which case you'd automatically and totally buy into the idea he's a good guy who did what anybody else would do and he's being wrongly persecuted. that he wiped out the killers' bloodlines beforehand seems like a more realistic depiction of the horrible places a soul could sink to in that situation. and still not be a bad guy. who knows what one would do; hopefully none of you.

it's what makes the character, and particularly Val Kilmer so good. the fact that you are torn, not sure whether the man is a hero, or a monster. he murdered 14 people who had nothing to do with the crime, does this make him a monster? yes.

he also killed the two people who (apparently, since he got to them) were not dealt with by the law, does this make him a hero? yeah it might. it also helps that he's a genuinely nice person in prison.

so is he good or bad? the fact that you can't decide is here the greatness lies.

reply

If I knew for a fact who was responsible I'd probably be tempted to kill them for it, but certainly NOT their families.
