Don't really get the love for this

The cute bear from darkest Peru ends up in London and with a family lead by the over-protective Hugh Bonneville. All kinds of manic antics ensue etc.
I thought from the reviews I had read there'd be a bit more to this to be honest. The accident prone bears antics and the skewed London was endearing for about 30 minutes but started to wear out it's welcome for me quite quickly. I'm surprised at how quickly actually as I thought it was supposed to be excellent, however it was predictable with Nicole Kidman's villain, full of cartoonish lunacy, and a few sad bits for toddler tears. Certainly kids would love it however not much here for adults, other than seeing what Lord Grantham would look like if he was Mrs. Brown (strange as his name is Henry Brown in this). 6/10

Well, I guess once you find a critic that shares your taste in films and hence the judgement of whom you can trust, s/he can be useful in that you can take with some confidence his/her word on whether a film is good or bad (according to your standards of taste). So they can be useful in that they can save you time from watching a film you're probably not gonna like. At least that is why I seek the advice of my dear friend Mark Kermode, whose judgement has hardly ever let me down thus far.

Well, not being English/Australian I didn't know Paddington from a hole in the ground, but it appears that this a BIG thing in those areas. So people are bringing a whole gestalt to the subject. As a much loved institution, making the movie could have led to great disappointment by not hitting all the right notes. It would appear that the movie played on all the nostalgia and did the subject justice for a great many people. That's why all the love. The love was already there, ready to be released. Since I had no backlog to the material, it was a pleasant time killer with the family/kids. As far as that goes, since it has an insular, pre-built audience, they certainly had to walk a line to no alienate the uninitiated and leave them on the outside. So, in ninety minutes, they managed to make a pleasant time diverter, made a movie that well pleased its core audience, and made good money.

Well... I am from Canada...
I'm a grownup and...

I loved it!

The nostalgia bit is the key!

For those of us who grew up with Paddington,it did hit all the right notes and it was pretty true to the way I would expect a Paddington movie to be.

Simply sweet, fun and a little bit impossible.

Gave me a warm feeling all over. :)

Thanks for the memories and bringing imagination into "reality".

Paddington blows away Night at the Museum III. That was a steaming mess and much worse than Night at the Museum 1.

I dont get it either. The film was so dumb and filled with over used jokes, like the gas stove going off and filling the bathroom with water.
I keep getting fed the excuse that its a kids film, but for heavens sake, Big hero six and Wall-e are kids films and they are miles ahead of this.

reply

Big Hero Six was miles ahead of Paddington? Big Hero Six was filled with lazy writing, underdeveloped characters, and predictable twists, and a one dimensional villain.
