Plot Contrivance to Get Statham Involved...

I wanted to half-watch a dumb movie, and I got one. I did not, however, track Statham's involvement.

After the first act, there's a flashback showing Statham's right-hand guy urgently asking the boss for help with a job that's only a few blocks away. Statham just has to report which direction the truck turns.

ETA: TENTATIVELY SOLVED moviechatterer (below) deduces that these are separate crews with different techniques. Statham's people will hit the truck further along the route, so they need the turn direction. The crew that performs the robbery presumably possesses inside information so they're all set up. Statham's kid is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The rest of my OP follows for posterity.

This does not make sense to me on several levels.

1) They're already set up for the direction the truck turns. I doubt they have redundant equipment set up for the other route, nor could they get personnel over there. The simplest solution is to just block off that route.

2) Even though a scout is not necessary, why are they relying on organized crime? This is supposed to be a tight crew?

3) Since Statham's people know this crew, why is it such a mystery to find out who pulled off the job?

What am I missing? Because this makes about as much sense as loading $180M into a Prius.

it was a totally separate crew did the ambush

Statham is cueing this crew, right? If so, then his people should have a line on them.

reply

i didnt think so at first, I thought he was there separately for his own crew and , coincidentally , these soldiers hit the same truck. the same day.

But something i read in another thread suggests he was cueing them yes.

reply

I mean , we know robbing cash trucks was in his own crews repertoire 'cos they did it later on .
Also the guy with the bike accident was supposed to be doing some part , presumably that part.

reply

OK, so it's not a coincidence (that would be problematic), and his people collaborate with these other thieves on some level. So why can't his guys find them?

reply

why can't his guys find them?
Why indeed !? (that more problematic!)
I'm going back to my first theory that the ambush by the military guys was a complete surprise and the recon Statham was doing was for his own crew intending to hit that same truck later on the route , or a 3rd crew intending to hit it later.

We know the military guys who *did* hit it were being fed info from the inside so they'd already know which way the truck was going to turn , as evidenced by all the hardware they had set up , including the digger they lifted the rear wheels with .

That makes the most sense. Quite the contrivance.

i agree.
