why would you go to high school for all of eternity?

This has to be the dumbest part of the movie. High School would seriously get old fast.

So, you were 17 when you became a vampire. Just get a job at subway, when someone says, man you look kind of young shouldn't you be in high school. You laugh and say no, I graduated last may.

End of story. I graduated with a kid that looked like he was 12, he joined the Army after high school. It could easily be pulled off.

1) They wanted to live together in one place for as long as they possibly could.
2) They wanted to mingle with humans. To remind themselves why they are 'vegetarians.'
3) They didn't just go to high school, they also went to college.
4) They sometimes divided up into couples for a number of years before reconnecting again.
5) They never sleep, so a few hours out of their day at school to keep up their appearance doesn't really mess up their day. They didn't need to study, so they could be thinking about things they plan on doing when they get home. (Alice is a clothing designer. Edward writes music. Rosalie is a mechanic. ... etc.)

Plus ... it's a YA book series. And it isn't the only YA vampire book series where the vampires attend school. It's a fantasy.

If it isn't your cup of tea, drop it like it's hot and find books that are your cup of tea. 

What I dont get is where do they start? They cant all just re-enroll as freshman... they are way to old looking. So is it like 5 years or something in school then they just do it all over again? Especially Breaking Dawn versions that look like theyre all mid 20s to late 30s.

And is Carlieall or whatever the only one who works? He has to bust his ass to support 7 vampires for the rest of eternity?

No. Carlisle is not the only one who works. Esme flips houses. Alice plays the stock market and designs clothes. Edward came from a wealthy family. He inherits his fortune every few decades. ... ...

The actors are playing younger than they are. The actors age ... the fictional vampires do not. They have no problem re-enrolling in high school over and over.

I would go to high school for ever, if I could. A lot better than being an adult and having to pay rent, bills, work a job, and having no free time to do whatever you feel like. But that's just me...

If you're a vampire, you don't need to sleep, or get fatigued. You wouldn't need to pay rent if you buy property outright, which you could easily do. You'll save a fortune on food, to say nothing of heating, water and electricity bills, to say nothing of the fact that if you're immortal, financial gambles don't mean anywhere near what they'd mean to a person who'll die at like 80 or whatever.

reply

Yeah, but in high school you can't cut classes w/o getting in real trouble. I once "cut" every single class (except the first one) in my Math 100 class in college and basically showed up for the mid-term and the final exams, scored a 98 and got an "A". Regular attendance wasn't a requirement for that particular class (thank god, 'cos it was at the godawful hour of 8am on a Monday), so a lot of us cut it and just kept up on the notes from the prof.

College gives you a lot more freedom than high school. But, of course, they can't all attend the same college, could they? Who knows.

A better question is do these people have a social security number? If they do, how come they can keep their names and keep enrolling in high schools (and colleges) around the country? Or is Edward and/or Alice somehow adept at fixing that and just come up with fake numbers every time they change locale? Did Stephenie Meyer ever address that?

They create complete new identities for themselves when they pick up and move to a new location. When they left Forks in New Moon following Jasper's attempt to kill Bella, they were totally untraceable. They completely vanished from the public record. I've also read that Edward inherits (under a new identity) his estate from himself roughly every half century.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

reply

So you're saying they change their names? Really? So Edward is no longer Edward Cullen when they move? Are you sure?

You didn't answer my question about the social security numbers, really. But no worries. I doubt even Stephenie Meyers has thought that much about it. ;)

I'm sure first and foremost (though its never explicitly acknowledged), they'd get themselves new social security numbers. And when they move to a new location (from Forks), they'll pretend to have different family relationships. Before they moved to Forks, for example, Edward pretended to be Esme's brother.

Rest in peace, Roger Ebert. You were the best.

High school was much more entertaining than a job in subway would be.

I loved high school. Every day was dramatic.

It's more than I can say for adult life.

reply

High school had it's fun moments but overall I wouldn't want to go to high school forever.

But the Cullens don't get into all the high school drama. They aren't children, and they watch the 'children' ... and their antics ... from a distance. They're just there, killing time, in order to keep up an appearance. What is eight/nine hours out of a 24-hour day when you never sleep? 

Until Bella, of course. Bella gave them a closer connection to the humans. And Renesmee most likely will as well in the future. This connection doesn't just keep up their 'human' appearance, it also helps keep them 'human.' That is their goal as well. To stay in contact with the humans in order to maintain their affection for them ... to keep them off their food list.

JMHO ... YMMV

Understandable but you can kill time doing something other then going to high school. Heck I'd do all kinds of stuff instead of going to high school over and over again: get different jobs, travel the world, try different things, etc.

And they do do that. They live separately, as couples, from time to time. They only go to high school when they choose to live together as one big family. They also go to college as well. Carlisle needs to keep on top of the latest/newest medical information and gadgets. Either he will go, or he sends Rosalie or Edward in his place. They don't go from one high school to another ... to another ... to another ... etc.

The story we got in the books, is just but a small portion of how they live their lives. There is a bit more info on the 'Twilight' world in: The Official Illustrated Guide. (For those who are unaware, or haven't made time to read it yet: http://astore.amazon.com/stepheniemeye-20/detail/0316043125) The books are Bella's story, not the Cullen's story. We see them through Bella's eyes. We learn what Bella learns. So if we go by only what is in the books, our perspective is a bit jaded. JMHO YMMV

[Edit]

And movies, as well.

Except the Cullens don't really do that. Didn't you see how their walls were filled with diplomas?

Let's be bad guys.

reply

I'd say it's because Meyer was still stuck in a high school mentality when she wrote this. She no doubt believed high school was the high point of her life and so set about doing the same thing for her characters.

reply

I don't think that's a fair assumption at all. YA especially paranormal books is a goldmine especially if said book series or books gets made into movies or TV shows so of course any author would want to get into it and write books

I've read through this thread and if you would pick going back to high school vs being an adult, you're living wrong. High school was great and all, but to be a perpetual teenager with limited freedoms and hardly any real world experience? Count me out.

I've never fooled anyone. I've let people fool themselves.

reply

Yes, I agree. I had as much fun in high school as anybody believe me.

What made high school fun was the friends, after school stuff. Hanging out etc. My friends were kids I'd went to school with for most of my life, some since kindergarten.

Honestly high school had ran it's course after 4 years and it was time to move on. I couldn't imagine hanging out in high school without the close friends. I definitely wouldn't want to move to another school and do it all over again with an entirely new group of kids.

College was a brand new experience. Living away from home, having roommates, more freedom. It was no comparison to high school.

Having a job and not being tied down to anything or anyone is the ultimate freedom. I couldn't imagine going back to high school. Like I said it was fun, but it had definitely ran it's course and I was ready to move on. I couldn't imagine 80 years down the line, still hanging out with teenagers and going to English class at 8:30, I'd stick a wood plank through my heart.

reply

I had an issue with this as well. The fact there is actually known diseases that causes people to age slower could be used to explain why they look young. They could all open up a butcher shop in town to interact with other people. This would also give them their animal blood.
