How could it have been the full jackpot?

Rule 1 said you can't quit the game at anytime until rule 3 if the majority agreed but the penalty was that the survivors get nothing and that the living relatives of the dead would get 100 million won each. Since most died on the first day and they quit right after, that jackpot should've been less than half the earnings. Unless they were paying extra for just quitting which sounds dumb in itself but I guess if you're filthy rich it dun matter either way.

My theory is that the old man's vote didn't count since the old man was not a real player. That would mean that a majority of the players did not vote to end the competition since the old man's vote was the tie-breaker.

The old man is the host and he makes the rules. If one doesn't agree with the host, they get a bullet in the head.

My guess is that the old man had never played the game before so he didn't have much empathy for the participants until he was surrounded by people bleeding out. I assert that his up-close brush with carnage and his fading health stirred up the empathy and compassion that he hadn't felt in years. That is why he decided to send everyone home so he would not be the one to condemn them all to death. They did recruit everyone back who was willing/desperate to play so the game was back on.

Good point. Maybe that would have happened if they wouldn't had come back for more??

You misunderstood. The dead players' families would have only gotten the money if the remaining players walked away. But they didn't walk away, they played to win.

THEY DID WALK AWAY! That's the whole point of them returning home before deciding to come back for more. So the amount then would've been deducted and sent to the dead families while those that came back would've still had their amount worth intact. I think in the end it's a stupid plot hole that wasn't addressed since they clearly continued where they left off after Game 1 and didn't restart nor add any additional broke players into the player base. Maybe they knew there was a high return rate for players so they just said that non-sense but no one questioned it after coming back.

Again: they come back so they didn't really walk away. Probably if they would have not returned the money would had been split.

They halted the games but enough people came back to continue with contest #2. I contend that the jackpot would have gone to the dead competitors' beneficiaries if the games were ended. The games did resume so the jackpot was not doled out to the competitors' beneficiaries.

Yes, I see the issue now. They added that rule right at the last minute.

Only something like 14 people walked away in reality.

They explained at the time that after the vote they would be given some time to reconsider, and if they decided to resume the game, the prize money would still go to the winner. It would only go to the families of the dead if the game was cancelled for good, which it wasn't.

Do you have a timeframe on episode 2 when they said this?

Update:
Nvm, I see what you mean now. Supervisor specifically said if the majority return then they'll resume the game where it left off (don't know why I didn't keep watching after that part, lol). Since only 14 didn't return, it was resumed.

You'd think they would've added this to the Player Consent Form of all this but they just added that tidbit right at the end.

Yeah, we were just rewatching this - The money was just "resting" until they decided whether to return or not. Like you said, the money wouldn't have been sent until after a majority had confirmed they weren't coming back...
