well it has definetly happened before. Ben Lyons admitted to taking checks from Warner Bros to push good reviews for their movies. remember when called I Am Legend "one of the best films ever made" and even roger ebert himself called him out? He also called Harry Potter 6 a "modern day 2001: A Space Odyssey". On a smaller note, the guys at Spill.com (now named Double Toasted) admitted to getting paid to give Macgruber positive reviews. They said that the studio helped fund their website with advertisements and that in exchange they give the film a positive review, and that other smaller indie review sites also got similar deals.

Indeed, it's the only super-hero franchise that has been doing well since Marvel ended their cycle almost three years ago.
To be fair, it's about the only superhero franchise that's put out a film in the past three years. Wonder Woman and Suicide Squad both released turkey sequels, but otherwise I can't think of any other franchise continuations that have been released.
