Why not do spinoffs / prequels instead of direct sequels?

The failures of Revolutions and, now, this film could imply that they don’t have the artistic ability to follow up to the first two films. In addition, some actors got older, and some had to be replaced, like Fishburne.

Why don’t they just leave the original alone and instead rely on spinoffs / prequels? They could introduce a brand new character in the Matrix universe, they could focus on Seraph (eg the story about how he defeated Agent Smith once), the could do something involving the Merovingian and the Twins. They could do something about Niobe ... there are so many fresh routes they could go

You are right. I would have left the original story alone, ended however it had. I don't understand why the need to recast people. If the actors aren't dead, won't they want to be in the new movie? If they don't, just don't include their character. Build a movie around those that want to be in it. The main leads could have been just cameos (Neo/Trinity), while the movie itself could have shown an other side of the old stories.

They basically did that with Animatrix.

I will say, the first 30 minutes or so with Neo had me kinda wishing they'd gone all out on that story, and given us a mind screw of The Strange Color of Your Body's Tears levels of "WTAF am I watching here?", replete with recognizable but repurposed Matrix imagery and iconography.

Wouldn't happen in a million years, I know, but hey, a man can dream.

I agree, I really liked the beginning. You won't see a lot of people agreeing with you on here because the settled-on narrative of this movie is that the beginning was the worst part because it was a "parody" of the Matrix

reply

Yeah, I can certainly understand not liking it (it's not like I thought it was this flawless masterpiece, or anything), but some of the things I've read left me scratching my head and thinking I must've missed something.

The "parody" thing is definitely one - I don't get where that comes from at all. "Too much comedy" was another; the only moment that struck me as outright comedic was Neo trying and failing to fly, but then again it's not like the original was completely devoid of humor ("the door to your left! No, your other left!"), anyway.

Niobe:A Matrix Story (co starring Will Smith as Neo mark 7)
