A Detail that Does Not Make Sense

Okay, if I can accept vampires and witches and werewolves, why does this particular detail stand out?

What I mean is Maggie Evans sees the ad for a governess and applies. On her way there in a train, she sees a travel poster for visiting Victoria B.C., a winter wonderland. She immediately decides to call herself Victoria Winters.

When she arrives at Collinwood, she introduces herself with her new name.
Willie Loomis says that Mrs.Stoddard is expecting her.

No, she was expecting Maggie Evans! Every time I have applied for a job, I use my real name. How did she explain her new name? How did she have the time to apply for I.D. with a new name?

I know the seventies were not big on getting employee background checks for people working with children. But why would Elizabeth hire a stranger with no I.D.?

Only thing I can think of is Maggie found a phone along the way, called Elizabeth and said that her friend Maggie did not want the job. But she would like an interview.
