Moretz ruined this film...

Michelle Pfeiffer, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter, and Johnny Depp were really good in this movie... And there were a lot of really hilarious scenes/lines, but I honestly think Chloe Moretz flat out ruined the film. She was just horrible, and her character was so poorly written...
I really think that if the film had ended 20 minutes earlier, and her character had been cut completely, this would have been a great movie.

Anyone else agree?

I thought she was good in this. She was like a typical, spoiled, sullen teenager.

I've taught high school so I've known a lot of them.

Roland, that's a lilac bush!

I think that's exactly why the OP think she ruined the film, because that's all her character was, a typical, spoiled, sullen teenager. Nothing special about the role at all. Her scenes really annoyed me and it felt like she tried too hard.

reply

Not every role has to be super special, not every teenager has anything special about them, it made a change to see a character who was as real as you can get.

reply

That's why she did a good job. Have yall not seen the show? Carolyn on the show was WORSE compared to how spoiled Chloe Moretz version was. If anything, they made Carolyn more bland until the end when she turned into a werewolf (which didn't happen on the show)

Her character was filler, and her bit at the end seemed anti-climactic. I get the feeling they were expecting a sequel from this movie so threw in her character to add a story element. To be honest I agree with the OP, they needed more focus on the boy with the issues but meh, Tim Burton is over-rated anyway, but he's Hollywood's "go-to-man" for anything supernatural and quirky.

reply

Next to "Hick", this is her worst performance.

reply

She was fine. Her removal would not have improved anything.

Agreed. I wonder why they decided to turn her into a werewolf in the first place?

The witch sent a werewolf to bite her in her crib. Why? Because she was a witch.

The werewolf character was such a part of the original series (with Quentin Collins rivaling Barnabas among the shows zealous fans) that I suppose Burton felt one had to be there but it could have been done better than a last minute toss in. Had we a sub plot with Carolyn luring about on a full moon killing off the locals or whatever then that would have been better.

Watch her in Movie 43, you'll begin to apologise for ever bashing her as an actress.

Wath her in 'Carrie' she's amazing!

I've been a Dark Shadows fan since 1970. I find it interesting that Dr. Hoffman giving the bj or the over the top, ceiling and walls sex between Barnabas and Angelique didn't ruin the film, but that Chloe did. Guess we'll have to agree to disagree.

She was okay in it to me, she got the whole 70's hippy chick thing with the lava lamps and trippy dancing down. My problem with her is she tries to act hot all the time, she's way young though and obviously picks her nose between takes SMH

I think the worst character in the movie was Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Hoffman. She was nothing like the character from the original or revival series, the character in this felt way too cliched and her subplot was just a distraction, like they threw her in just because she was so important to the original series. However she was sort of Barnabas' ally, and I think here Elizabeth filled that role just fine. I think the film would have been fine without her. If anything, more focus should have been put on Victoria Winters.

All that and she's the director's wife [ex-wife?] making out with Johnny Depp in every movie he makes. AwwwwwWwwwwkwkwkwkkkwkwkwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrddd

I've yet to see a performance of her that I like. Everything she does is so overwrought but never in a fun, cheeky way... Just in an acting with all of her might kind of way. It's especially painful to watch when the role is meant to be a serious one. Her Carrie was a train wreck of badly delivered dialogue and goofy facial expressions.

She didn't totally ruin this film for me, though, because she had such a small part and she was supposed to be annoying, so disliking her wasn't a bad thing in this case. It's a shame, because she seems like a nice, level-headed person in real life, she's just hard to watch on screen. Whenever someone brings her up in casting discussions (and someone always does) I want to shake them.

She is a good actress butt he role didn't do anything for me. it was the weakest link of all the performances.

I'm not entirely sure I agree. I did like her during the scene with the Alice Cooper concert, where she went on stage with the intro for "The Ballad of Dwight Fry."

Chloƫ Grace Moretz is a great actress and was awesome in this film. I've noticed lately that the newest trend is to hate on her. Haters are gonna hate.

reply

Yes, well haters are going to give her crap no matter what. It's an unfortunate part of the business. But I was replying to somebody who thinks she normally is good.
