if they didn't want people to leave
why was the exit unprotected , when people easily got to it before? earlier a character unbelievably casually hikes up a mountain to it with no one around

shareBecause the portal was only open each day for a certain amount of time. The men would leave each day to go to "work" but they were really going out into the real world and working to pay for the simulation and I would assume to continue to drug the wives (I would also assume there were feeding tubes and such associated with that).

Ryan explains it all.
None of it matters. It's a moronic movie where they didn't have to program the simulation so stupidly.
Exit. Pshaw. How stupid.
