why was the exit unprotected , when people easily got to it before? earlier a character unbelievably casually hikes up a mountain to it with no one around

Because the portal was only open each day for a certain amount of time. The men would leave each day to go to "work" but they were really going out into the real world and working to pay for the simulation and I would assume to continue to drug the wives (I would also assume there were feeding tubes and such associated with that).

None of it matters. It's a moronic movie where they didn't have to program the simulation so stupidly.

I had no plans to watch it but now the plot seems so stupid that I am compelled to watch it.

I'm sure it is WELL MADE, but that won't make it good.
Sounds like a 30 minute twilight zone episode stretched too long
