I'm usually a fan of Reese Witherspoon as an actress but I thought she was lacklustre in this film. There wasn't anything particularly bad about her performance but I just didn't believe her as Marlena for a second and couldn't empathise with her.

Considering the abusive relation she'd been living in her whole life, showing too much emotion would have (and was) dangerous for her. I think Reese did everything she could, given what she had to work with. She had to learn to handle herself around her husband the same way she did around animals - except her husband was more likely to hurt her.

I thought that they both did well individually... they just weren't very convincing as a potential couple.

She was okay - I'm glad scarlett johanson was NOT in it though, or I may not have ever watched this movie b/c I already didn't like Patterson going into this.
I kept trying to figure out who they should've cast instead, as I watched Reese's scenes. She wasn't bad, she looked okay, but I really didn't think she was a good fit for the character she played and I can't exactly say why....I guess to me, she's better suited for the roles she played as Elle Woods or the girl in Election; not some conflicted & alluring circus performer of the 30s.

I'm disappointed. I have never been much of a fan of Witherspoon but I like some of her movies. This one, however, couldn't make it to the list. She showed no emotion whatsoever at some scenes, I felt like I was watching a really lame play.
On the other hand, I used to dislike Robert and there was no particular reason, I just did. And I didn't expect much from him here either but he proved me wrong, he was quite good. But then again, it was too bad that they didn't seem to have have any chemistry at all which probably also does some part of the impression for the bad acting of Reese Witherspoon I got.

I agree with the OP. Not only was her acting lacking, her looks were too. I get that she had on makeup that was in line with the time period of the film, but it was just poorly done. Her hair bothered me too, lol. It was too dry and frayed. I couldn't tell if her hair was damaged or she was wearing a bad wig. Reese is cute, but I wouldn't consider her a natural beauty. I pictured Marlena as beautiful, no less than very pretty and that is not Reese. Reese looks borderline trollish but in a cute way.
