Glad you enjoyed it. Strong story and cast in a beautifully filmed setting.

It did a great job of creating that 1930's circus world.

Comments from the DVD, from the ROBsessedBlog tinyurl.com/3pshwb:

° They were all crying off camera during Hal's scene because his wife had passed away just months before and that broke their hearts. (Tink: broke all our hearts *sniffle*)
° Initially they wanted Hal to do all the voice over but then thought it would distance from the character and decided to try Rob's voice and really liked the result.

Richard LaGravenese, WFE screenwriter:

Q: Can you talk a little about the film’s cast?

A: When I read the book myself I thought of Reese because of a paragraph when Marlene (Reese’s character) is first introduced it described her complexion — the kind of beauty she had...

And Robert really has a lot of 1930s leading man qualities; he’s one of those actors who the camera just adores in the way that they did with 1930s leading men. And Christoph is just such a fine actor there’s no question about Christoph to make August (the main character’s rival in the film) a complex character.

This is what is really heartbreaking and intense, because it involves Rosie (it's name Tai) and it's real.

The good news is that after this investigation ... "Shortly after the release of the HTWT (Have Trunk Will Travel) investigation, the AZA appeared to have no choice but to separate themselves from the kind of practices that were exposed, and announced a new protected contact elephant management policy. This means that no keepers are allowed to share the same space with an elephant, thus ending the use of elephant hooks and the abuse."

And it would have been wonderful if the so called animal rights group had reported it when they had the video five years before this film was made rather than waiting until they could get more press. Opportunities to get laws passed in California were missed while they held on to the videos for something that would be more of a splash. They really showed they 'cared' didn't they?

8 p.m., HBO: Water for Elephants — A circus provides the setting for this slow-paced but well-acted 2011 adaptation of Sara Gruen's best-seller, with Robert Pattinson ("Twilight") as a Depression-era veterinary student who goes AWOL after his parents die. He hooks up with a traveling circus and gets involved with the star attraction (Reese Witherspoon), who has a possessive husband (Christoph Waltz). A special elephant becomes a factor in the triangle.

It's a big, old fashioned romantic movie that the whole family can watch. Francis Lawrence did a superb job of recreating the era, it's no wonder they tapped him for The Hunger Games franchise.

I really like this film. When I first saw it at the movie house, I had little idea of what it was about. But I found that I loved the story, loved how the movie was done, the animals especially Rosie. I loved the 1930s time frame of it, reminding me of my grandparents time as how things looked during some of their era.

reply

Agree. great movie and never read the book.

I'm really happy you enjoyed it. It's definitely underrated and the cinematography alone is absolutely superb.

I didn't think I would like this movie, but I sat down and watched it all the way through. It's a great story, beautifully made and even though I loathe Twilight I had to tell myself to base Robert Pattinson's performance on this movie and not that series. I was pleasantly surprised, he's a talented guy. Reece was beautiful, Christopher Waltz made me hate him...which is a good thing since you're not supposed to like his character.

I will admit that I have seen this movie about 3-5 times and it is still a great movie. I do wish that it would have incoporated the Uncle Al character and the scenes with Jacob in the nursing home but I know that there is only so much room that they can fit the material in. I think that Christopher Waltz did a good job as the crazy August.

reply

I saw the movie also multiple times and enjoyed every single one. Today is playing in USA TV.
