Is the Elephant Abuse Too Hard to Watch?
I'm really sensitive to violence against animals and I wonder if it would be too hard to watch in this movie? Were there multiple incidents?

shareThe biggest rampage is mostly offscreen, with a door closed while August rages. You do see the aftermath. It was a good movie.
shareNicolebridget22--I too am a HUGE animal lover, and had no idea that these scenes existed. I just watched this for the first time tonight, and both scenes were pretty disturbing, especially the elephant scene. I knew what would eventually happen with the horse so I muted the tv just before it happened because I didn't want to hear it. The scene with the elephant was very difficult for me...even though you really don't see it happening, it was the sounds of the event and the thought of what was happening to that poor animal that made me cry like crazy. Other than that, I thought it was a pretty good movie.
shareDamn, I really want to watch this movie but I can't bring myself to withstand violent scenes... Life of Pi made me cry SO much because of the animals... I'll just pass. :(
shareyes it was really hard for me watching the bastard hitting the elephant and i almost wanted to get into my 50' LED TV and hit him hard with a hammer..........and am i the only who thinks the title of the movie is somewhat misleading? there was only 1 elephant not 2 or 3.
shareMe too! That was the reason I didn't watch the movie sooner than I did.
The abuse is CGI, and even then, it is much more suggested than shown. It was very tasteful, allowing us to imagine what we don't see.
It was necessary to the plot to include it, but we really didn't see anything. We saw August striking Rosie with a bullwhip, but it was done by CGI.
And some abrasions after on Rosie, which Jacob treats. That is just makeup.
I had to cover my ears at one point because of the Elephants screams. You couldnt even see the abuse being done but hearing it was even too much for me. It is very hard to watch also but the end kind of makes you want to stand up and yell "WAY TO GO!!"
shareYes! That was a lovely scene indeed...when Rosie the elephant - took the metal device and struck August over the head. Rosie pretty much saved Marlena's life. Animals know. They are very intuitive...in knowing which people are good and bad. Loved that scene at the end. What a beautiful elephant.
shareI'm sensitive to animal abuse too, but this movie is playing on that. The abuse scenes are meant to upset the audience. I'm watching it right now, and the third incident with the elephant made me cry. But as everyone else had said here, it is all implied - it is not graphic. Still upsetting, though :(
I think I am starting to have an understanding of what the impending 'circus disaster' will be :(

The real elephant in the movie was abused to make the movie. Real video of the abuse the elephant endured to make this movie. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1384426/Water-Elephants-star-electrocuted-beaten-hooks-Shocking-new-video-shows-mistreatment.html
share@cookie2581 - You are making a false statement. There was no abuse of the elephant in the making of this movie. There are unproven allegations that there may have been abuse of this elephant years prior to the making of the movie.
shareThat's too bad, I really wanted to watch this. I can't stand seeing animal abuse, even in movies, those kind of scenes have become sooo irrelephant. I guess I'll just throw my DVD in the trunk and lock it up forever. I've thought of joining PETA but they seem to trumpet too much from their ivory tower. I do like some violence in film and I herd Robert Rodriguez's From Tusk Till Dawn was good.
sharePETA propaganda?
