Arturo Perez-Reverte, an author that I have been following for many years, is famous for his Captain Alatriste series that takes place in 16th century Spain. It is a great series of books that spans many years and has been translated into many languages. When he wrote Queen of the South, which I devoured, it was a big departure for him from his usual subjects. It remains one of my favorite books from Perez-Reverte, a truly great writer whose style flows easily from one story to the next.
When I started watching this TV series, I realized immediately that this production does not follow the original story or storyline. In fact, it deviates hugely from the book. This is a shame, in one way, because the original story is so interesting and well written and takes place mostly in Spain and the Mediterranean area around it. The visuals from the book are so rich and mesmerizing that I can easily say that this production, while not bad, not great either, has to stand alone and be judged on its own. The book is far superior and the mention of the telenovela has me intrigued and I will seek it out.
This production, while interesting, is being dragged out and milked to make it run longer than it should. Telling a concise story is a skill. Networks should take a page from BBC productions and HBO/Amazon/Showtime to make a series shorter and more powerful and not drag them out for 5 or 6 years as many are. There are exceptions, but this show is not one of them.
I like Alice Braga and some of the other actors on this show and hope it doesn't run more than it needs to. Fans should check out some of her Brazilian movies as well as her aunt Sonia Braga's work.
