Has Anyone Read the Books?

The original works by L.M. Montgomery in the Anne series are practically sacred to me (Anne of Green Gables, Avonlea, the Island, Windy Poplars, House of Dreams, Ingleside, Rainbow Valley and Rilla).
Why aren't the other books in the series turned into movies or TV shows? I absolutely love all of the other books, and there is plenty of fodder in them to produce several more works with. So why do TV execs insist on making up new story lines or even new characters?

The only movie I have ever been happy with was Anne of Green Gables, Megan Follows was almost perfect, although I thought she was too short. The sequel tried to combine too many plot lines and made story lines up to make everything work and I was disappointed by it. "Anne 3" and all other Anne shows just made me sad.

Am I alone on this, or would anyone else like to see all new story lines stopped, and the other books used?

I've read all the books and enjoyed the first 2 films. But Kevin Sullivan started to go off the rails with Anne 3 and he's completely lost it with Anne 4.

Personally I think if he wanted to tell more stories and not have them completely canon, he should have stayed away from trying to build up Anne's. It wasn't necessary and it's only making the fans angry. The series IS sacred to all of us and when we see it handled so poorly and with no respect to the author's work, it does tarnish what we held so dear.

He should have taken the little tidbits of Marilla and Mathew's story that was never fully fleshed out and gone from there.

I ABSOLUTELY agree with the OP here! L.M. Montgomery was such a wonderful writer, she had this biting sense of irony, but also was capable of writing so gently and truthfully about people and life.

I am hoping that someone, someday will do the Anne series and actually have respect towards the original writings. There's a reason everyone loves the little-red-haired girl, but onscreen, no one has had the chance to see her truly mature into the amazing woman L.M. Montgomery created.

I'm also really hopeful that someone will make good movies (or TV series') of Jane of Lantern Hill and The Blue Castle.

I loved the first Anne of Green Gables with Megan Follows. The second one is OK, not as great but still good. I like to pretend that I never saw the third and after reading all the comments here about the fourth movie (Gil dies?!?) I am really glad that I stayed away.

I have just finished the third novel, and I was surprised that the second movie and the second and third novel had so little in common. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the movies and I LOVE the novels so far. Can't wait to read the others. I read the first novel, then I saw the three films and was very well satisfied. I could read and the second and third novel without knowing entirely what was going to happen. I had no idea that the story with the Pringles were the last one to be written by Montgomery. I feel rather sad now, just finishing the third novel. I love Anne and I love Gilbert, and just don't know what to do just now.

I just think we sometimes must distance the novels from the films. As I've seen, they are very good. Although I can't imagine other than Megan Follows and Jonathan Crombie as Anne and Gilbert.

You can certainly tell the difference between Anne in the two first films, and Anne in the Continuing Story. However, I don't find the film bad. I liked it, even though it isn't Montgomery's original work. But as said, I don't think I will watch this one. It will be like reading Stephenie Meyer after Jane Austen, or Montgomery herself for that matter. Such a disgrace.

oh I SO agree!! Rilla of Ingleside - re-re-re-re-read again recently [as with the others].
The WW1 storylines would translate wonderfully to the screen and the growing up pains and maturing of Rilla..
and the House of Dreams with 'beautiful Leslie' and the mystery there [no spoiler]

I have wondered about this for years. A series of movies, or even a series or mini-series, that stayed true (or as true as possible in an adaptation to another medium) would surely make money - and would be a delight.

Why is it so impossible? It just seems crazy to me.
The story of Rilla was so wonderfully written ~ to re-write it into this ...trash is just painful to watch.
