I am not a serious birder. I just like being out in nature. That said, the most expensive trip Hubby and I ever took was "Birding Down Under." This is a trip on a small ship through the subantarctic islands of New Zealand and Australia to see some species which dwell nowhere else. I loved this movie, because most of the people on the trip WERE serious birders and got thrilled to go out on deck during gales with the water flowing over the pitching deck and get a rare species. I was so glad we went on this trip as a once-in-a-lifetime thing! I now have all the species of penguins in the world but one. I lack only the Emporer Penguin, which nests in the interior of Antarctica. Think "March of the Penguins." As a birder said to me on this trip, "Now that's going to be one expensive bird to get!"
