Are they trying to say Angels are not attractive? Angels are supposed to be beautiful but in this movie, Gabriel and Micheal were ugly.

Angels are warriors. Warriors are not classically beautiful. Both Michael and Gabriel were perfect and the actors perfect for the roles. Gabriel had so much sadness and confusion because of constantly without fail doing the Lord's bidding, and yet still it was Michael the Lord favoured. Michael felt so much love for his brother and it showed. If people could not see the beauty in these angels then they are sadly very shallow :(

Of course there were no attractive angels in heaven the hot ones were busy on earth fighting over the life of the saviour of humanity!!! Personally I think Paul Bettany and Kevin Durand were perfect choices for Micheal and Gabriel, especially Kevin the man brings a whole new meaning to the term ripped!!!!

The OP is right. People in Antiquity already imagined that Angels were *pretty*, the Jewish-Roman historian Flavius Josephus, for example, described the angels that came to the City of Sodom as "beautiful boys". It's a modern phenomenon to believe that angels should look like middle aged men or hot women as this transformers-chick.

Gabe caught my eyes when I first saw him. Plus he's a french native speaker, so do I. He's definitively my good looking Archangel.
And for your information (4 all the strange posts I read above!), angels aren't beautiful in the human sense, feature face and body shape. Their beauty is in their qualities and their devotion to God and the faith. That what Michael shows in the movie.
One of the first statement of the strongest believer is to be able of doubting of the rule. The angel can use his free will(Remenber the Devil who chose freely evil!). Michael did it and decided to do the opposite of what God told him to. That's the reason why he came back in the Army at the end. Christianism allows the doubt because the one who survive the doubt his stronger than the blind believer. The doubt is the ultimate proof of faith(Even God's son doubted on the cross).
Second point, he sacrified himself more than once. His eternity by coming on earth and cutting his wings. His "soul" because he couldn't be sure 100% of God forgiveness. And his human life giving Charlie, the baby, and Jeep a chance to escape. And most of all he showed a great mercy toward Gabe that's the reason why he is BEAUTIFUL.
Gabe is also beautiful. A great soldier. Faithful till the end whatever his master ordered but not senseless. I say so because you can see the pain in his eyes when he fights against he's beloved brother.
As they're portrayed in this movie they are the judeo-christian version of archangels and as a catholic we all know that angels have no gender. They're not men and they're not women. So if you're searching for human standard of beauty in angels, it's going to be a little tricky!
The basics are there but so poorly developed. I can't understand how they screwed up with this film. He could have been another Constantine. Too bad!
