shareWell, Nightmare Alley, West Side Story and Dune were remakes.
shareYeah, it says that in the first line of the article -- but the point is in the title.
shareCountering the premise of the article is that Ariana Dubose won best sporting actress for playing the same role that Rita Moreno won for. Familiarity doesn't necessarily breed contempt. It did help that both Moreno and Dubose each gave the most outstanding performances in their respective films.
I do think that WSS was hurt by not breaking enough ground with its predecessor. Nightmare Alley- i never saw the original but most things I've read said it was superior - however, the flaws in the current one probably are what hurt it. And Dune - also superior according to most of what I've read but scify genre doesn't often win Best picture. It did great in other categories.
I don't think a lot of people knew that Dune and Nightmare Alley are remakes either.
The former got remade 37 years later after the original movie and the latter got remade 74 years later.
Thanks for that information. I just reserved the DVD for the original, La famille Bélier.
If they're going to release the film on a TV streaming service instead of a movie theater, then it should be nominated for only an Emmy.
