Why does Winston always call Wick "Jonathan"?

Wick's name is John with an 'H', which would suggest his full first name is simply John, not Jonathan. Every Jonathan I've ever known who prefers the shortened version spells their name Jon -- no 'H'.

I realize this is fairly trivial but I'm always surprised Wick never corrects Winston for calling him by the wrong name. Then again, I suppose he has more important things to worry about.

John Ritter's full name was Jonathan Ritter...

I suppose there's an exception to every rule.

John Ritter was the bomb. Left us too early.

reply

He calls him Jonathan because he can and he treats John like he's his son

reply

Not sure what you mean. If Wick's actual name is just 'John' and not 'Jonathan', how can Winston calling him by the wrong name be considered treating him as a son?

reply

I had a co-worker who was named Jonathan but he went by John. He said that if he shortened his name to Jon it would be a huge hassle correcting everyone who misspelled his name.

reply

Funny you mention that, as I’ve known a couple Jons who did get annoyed by people misspelling their names. I guess that explanation does make some sense.

reply

Ian Mcshane is British so maybe that was a little detail he added to his character. They're always so proper.

reply

Fair point, definitely a possibility.
