Absolutely Awful

This was one of the most shockingly bad films I have ever seen. I was actually a big fan of Sam Rockwell's. I am much less so today. How he ever accepted this role is beyond me, as was his absolutely horrid performance.

While I didn't think it was shockingly bad (there are far worse out there), it certainly wasn't real good and it should have been given the background they had to work with!

I have to agree on some of the bad effects and poor choices. Some of the ghost stuff was just plain awful. The cinematography just didn't capture a cinematic feel for me with some of the lighting completely flat (that's not a way to raise tension). There were numerous effects in the original film which were better. You know, practical effect corpses are better than CGI crap every time.

Plus, the script felt rushed with different characters spitting out lines from the original but there was no weight behind what they were saying. It's like they just had to get the lines in there for the hell of it.

Giving credit where credit is due, I don't think this was much worse than the second Poltergeist movie, which itself was dumb cash-in on the original. Also, the Ghost Dimension was 10x better than Poltergeist 2. Still, if that's the best it's got....

This isn't a great film. It should have been but wasn't. And before anyone waves a hand and says "yeah but it's a modern movie...it's going to be like this", Insidious (which was obviously inspired by Poltergeist) is a much better movie. I liked it. That doesn't speak well for the team behind Poltergeist. They had so much to draw on, but squandered it. Grade C.

Indeed. Even if I'd never seen the original, I still would have thought it was rubbish.
