Well acted but not very interesting

So I watched The Power of the Dog on Netflix. My thoughts: The Power of the Dog is beautifully filmed and well acted, but I didn't find it very compelling or interesting. There isn't enough substance here to make an impact for me. I'm sure it will get lots of Oscar nominations and may win a few, but I don't think this is one of the best pictures of the year. My rating is a 7/10.

Agreed. The actors are very good, but they are not given very much to do.

reply

I was about to say. It looks and acts very Oscar-worthy but not much of a story here.

reply

Agreed. I found it boring. If not for the great actors I would have skipped it entirely. 5/10

I thought the story was very interesting. There are a lot of things going on in the movie: changes in the way of life, old ways vs modern, change in the roles of men and women, a man desperately holding on to the past in order to keep something from his forbidden love, and even an elaborate murder plot by someone who is probably a psychopath.

Agree with the OP - beautifully acted and shot, but hollow and pretentious. And, yes, B O R I N G.

The themes of closeted gay men may have been provocative in the 1967 book, but this material has been covered ad nausem in far greater movies than this.

Watch only if you're out of Ambien.

I think it’s lacking the gravitas that ‘Oscar movies’ carry. It looks like one and acts like one too, but it’s missing something.

I also think the Oscars kind of hate Netflix pictures. Is that issue resolved? I haven’t kept up these last couple of years.

reply

I'm not sure if it has been resolved yet. Netflix films have been nominated for best picture, but never won, although a few of them have won in other categories.

reply

Well, turns out you were right. It’s been nominated for Best Picture today.

Edit: And many others (directing + all the actors).

This is one of those movies that should be seen in the theatre. It is so expansive and your eye will take you to the mountains, the sky, the river, and the beauty and loneliness of this place. Whereas, if you are at home, even on a larger TV - your mind wanders all over the place. Plus, you can pause and start and you generally lose the rhythm of the movie. The movie is like a short story - it has that twist at the end that makes all the difference. And then you think about the movie long after you’ve seen it. There are not a lot of great movies out or that have come out in a long time, so this one deserves special recognition. Jane Campion is fantastic. I did love The Piano better; it was one of my favorite movies a while back and it got a lot of controversy too. The acting in this movie is exemplary as well.

reply

Agreed and a 7 rating is too high..I was bored and it wasnt compelling as it could have been with that cast and with great acting.

reply

the academy doesn't agree with you. 12 nominations.

reply

The academy is wrong! Except when they agree with me...

reply

The academy is made of of idiots that have given the world the likes of Ishtar, Gigli and Battle Field Earth... When you have nominations made by morons they pick bad movies just like the make bad movies. If the academy was actually filled with good people they wouldn't create shit movies. If they simply decreed that any member that ever helped make a box office turd was kicked out for life you might end up with an academy that was worthy of making nominations.. but right now its 99% morons that would know a good movie if you shoved it up their ass. Power of the Dog was a pretentious pile of shit.
