Can anyone recommend other great dog movies?

One man and his Dog is also a very nice touching movie about an old lonely man and his dog. Its a bit slow but worth seeing. Its not just about a dog but about life.

Also, Eight below. There is a US version and a Japanese version.

do you know any???

Greyfriars Bobby, it's also a true story and very similar to this one.

Thanks !
I thought of few myself recommended by someone also using this link.

1. The Tale of Mary and the 3 puppies ( great movie, really !! )
2. Ten promises I made to my dog
3. Eight Below
4. An man and his dog

It appears that someone has spent way too much time and effort to try and disprove the whole Greyfriars Bobby story.

In 2011 Jan Bondeson at Cardiff University published research that suggests Bobby was actually a Victorian-era publicity stunt by local businesses to drum up tourist revenue. According to Bondeson's research, Bobby was a stray dog trained to remain in the graveyard; and was actually two different dogs.

To be honest, and in my opinion, this man has a heartless soul, whose only result out of all his work is to try and destroy a wonderful story that has inspired millions of people.

Antarctica / Nankyoku monogatari (the film 8 below is based off of)
Plague Dogs (preferably unedited)

My dog Skip is a good movie, yes i cried at the end of that one too

reply

I really enjoyed My Dog Skip as well!

Not sure if you've seen these classics, but Old Yellar is an amazing film, as well as Lassie Comes Home.

Benji movies were a hit in the 80's and I adored them. They were tear jerkers for sure lol. Mind you, I haven't seen one in decades so I'm not really sure how it would fare if I watched it now.

Turner & Hooch and K-9 are great comedy/action movies with great casts.

I cried at all of these, but honestly, nothing in comparison to this movie. Probably because it's based on a true story, so it has more impact ya know?

I avoided My Dog Skip, Marley & Me, Eight Below and Hachi because I am such a crier. Watched the end of My Dog Skip without knowing what I was watching. (I'd been channel surfing) and cried my eyes out. What kept going through my mind was that, at the end, Skip must have been wondering where his boy was. Okay, crying now.

NBC played Hachi last night. Watched it...and cried. Used at least 6 tissues in the last 10 minutes alone.

Marley and Me.

I haven't seen too many dog movies, but you can't go wrong with Marley and Me or the classic, Old Yeller.

"Quill" it will make you BAWL. It might be hard to find, it's Japanese and subtitled in English.

THE best movie in the same genre is a rare Russian movie from 1977 called: "White Bim black ear" The original title is "Belyy Bim - Chyornoe ukho "

I saw this movie when I was just a wee girl and it haunted me for decades.
It is not only a dog's sad story, but the story of the fickleness of life and a mans humanity.

Disclaimer: Have at least 2 boxes of Kleenex handy while watching!

yes, that. I've seen it in original, and it's a 9/10 for me (compared to 6/10 for Hachi)

Where The Red Fern Grows (made me cry at the end)

Oh and it's bizarre that this evening we began to watch Hachi ... because just this morning my husband showed me article from a 1966 western magazine about a dog named "Shep" who did exactly what Hachi did!

Needless to say when Hachi began and I saw it was about a man and a dog and there was a train station involved, I was thinking it was based upon exact same dog "Shep".

Which, ironically the incident with Shep also happened in the 1930s as did the true incident with Hachi.

Here's page about that dog ... there's also a link to video clip of the dog at bottom of the page.
