Before I saw the movie, I knew it was based on a real story and I knew that I'd probably cry when Hachi and Parker reunited.But goddamn, this movie is easily the saddest I've ever seen, by far.I cried three times(when Parker died, when Hachi and Parker's wife were reunited, and when Hachi died).And when I say cry, I don't mean that I shed a tear or two, like I do with most shows and movies.I mean that I cried like a baby.This movie made me its b*tch.The only time I've ever cried this hard(I think)was when I first saw Jurassic Bark.

Yeah, I just watched this movie and it also kicked my behind. Only other movie that destroyed me harder was Grave of The Fireflies.

I doubt it's sadder, but i don't wanna risk watching it.I don't know If i can stand anymore sadness.

As a manly man who never cries I can proudly say I cried my eyes out for Grave of the Fireflies. I have never cried more in my entire life. It hit me extremely hard because I thought it was going to be a standard happy studio ghibli movie.
Also I am shocked that this movie brought me to tears, even though I am not a dog fan (more of a catman).

Much sadder, because Hachi makes me feel warm, while Grave of the Fireflies just made my bone frozen.

However, I say and the IMDb rating say that Grave of the Fireflies is a better movie, no matter how sad it is.

I hope the OP and others are women and not men. If you are a male and cried your eyes out during this movie you need to paint your fingernails pink, wear some lipstick, and turn in your man card. Hope you did not tell anyone. Ugly.

My girlfriend cried her eyes out watching this movie and told me I will too, never came close to shedding a tear and I lost a dog I loved.

Yeah ok. We all know you cried. No need to act all macho about it. Next you'll say you're 6'5", 250 pounds with 6 pack abs. Get over it, you cried. Move on.

Oh this movies pulled on all of my strings.. I started tearing up when the prof. died and kept it up till the very end.. I have a soar throath now.. Wonderfull movie. Never had this much emotion for a movie before.. they did a great job with this one

I'm with you - I didn't stop crying from the moment the professor died until the end of the movie the first time I watched it.

Now, I cry before then, because I know what's coming...

OP - I can easily say I have never cried this much while watching a movie. I bawled after Parker died and did not stop bawling even after the movie ended. And when I say bawl .. I mean the kind where you are gasping for air, body shaking, etc. Thank God I never watched this in a theatre or I would've really embarrassed myself lol.

Hachiko's story was familiar to me before I saw this movie so I knew what was going to happen. Reason why I had started crying early on, as I see Hachi and Parker form their bond..seeing Hachi look so happy everytime Parker comes out of the station....That moment when Hachi finally fetches the ball for Parker.. Was it to make him happy, or to stop him from going?
I loved how they showed the world from Hachi's eyes. Beautiful film.

Isn't 06986 such a wonderful example of manhood. Not only did he never get near shedding a tear but also stopped by this board just to belittle anyone else who did. What a guy! Sorry that's a typo - I meant to say what a prick. I'm a 41 year old man and cried at the end and have no shame in admitting it. I'm much rather my son grow up like me able to show emotion than be an emotionally retarded perinuem like 06986.

What message??? That this is what dog owners want from their pet? That it is so stupidly loyal it pines away and dies? Isn't that a horrible ego thing, surely what you'd want if you loved your dog is that it moved on and found another master or family. It's kinda sick this fetishising of loyalty that includes pointless early death. I know it's a true story, I've seen the statue in real life. But like the other stories of so-loyal-they-be-dead dog tales, it's not inspiring or heart-warming when you think about it. Some dog lovers have cruel fantasies.

On the other hand its hilarious this is the only Richard Gere movie in IMDB's top 250.
