hello! he should have called the cops and had that jag weed ryan arrested. what better revenge than to see a posh guy lose everything and go to jail! and in the end of the movie jake sees ryan in the school parking lot and just nods at him, as if he hadn't just beat the crap out of his best friend. what the *beep*
That nod should never have been in the film, mutual respect.
WTF - this guy was taunting your dead father not so long ago and had you not kicked his @ss would prob still be kicking yours left right and centre to the day.
He should have told Ryan to go Eff himself when he nodded, or at least flipped the bird.
He didn't nod at him, he stared him down and got a nod as a sign of respect in return, in a way also a sign of submission, he knew his place and knew who was the better man.
Ryan beat the crap out of his friend so he would fight, even the friend knew this, a low down thing to do but understandable for someone with that much pride and need to prove himself. (to his father as it turned out who pushed him)
Yeah that's true about being out of jail on bail after 2 hours. But even if he did try and call the police wouldn't he kick the phone out of his hand or something?
No way. Not only would he probably get away with it but the point of all the fights and what not is for pride, I know alot of people seem to think calling the cops solves everything but some people like to keep their pride intact, I wouldn't of called the cops. Plus what was mentioned above.. it woulda been a *beep* ending!

If everybody calls the cops, you will have no movies to watch.
I tend to come up with two answers: one is serious, the other is silly.
1) The gut of the movie is: to rise to the challenge, have the heart and train hard, to beat the villain in his own game. Jake is confident that with his heart and newly acquired skills, he can physically and psychologically defeat Ryan, for good. In this case, calling the cops is for whinies and weaklings.
2) George Bush has reduced this country to irreversible decline. The government does not have the money to pay the police to go about to deal with boys beating up each other.
Simple answer... because then it will be like Tyler is the loser. He would be mocked that he had to call the police t end it and acted as a "wimp" i guess.
He would lose his pride as well. He would have needed to actually teach Ryan a lesson.
Its like when you tell the teacher and dob someone else in, you will be laughed at for telling the teacher.
The movie does toss out a semi-believable excuse for not calling the cops. It is likely that Ryan would have found more of Jake's friends to hurt. Better to nip it in the bud then.
You know what i realised about people saying "go handle your business unless you're a p*ssy", they always tend to talk the talk but never walk the walk. Especially when they are talking behind a computer...

That's something people believe until they mentally age beyond their teens. It doesn't matter what kind of physical finesse you possess, you either learn to use the system or you make yourself a target for it.
