Am I the only one who thinks this is incredibly underrated?

Surely this film deserves at least an 8. It's arguably the best "rom-com" of the last ten years, and poignantly conveys the feeling of unrequited love and the hopelessness that ensues. The soundtrack is sublime, and there's some really brilliant moments such as the expectations vs. reality scene. But most importantly, it's one of the most real films I've ever seen. I gave it a 10 and have since watched it ten times in the past 2 years. What do some people not like about it?

I recall this film being widely praised—and financially successful too—but it definitely seems that people have forgotten about it.

You're probably right, I just dont think it received the recognition it perhaps deserved

reply

You're not the only one, I think it's underrated too. This movie should be at the top 250

There was no "com".

It was a 5/10 for me.

I think 500 Days actually has many comedic moments, just not the flashy slapstick type, they're more understated and deadpan.

Off the top of my head, I remember:
- Tom and Summer's trip to a museum, which they tried to justify by giving philosophical interpretations to blank canvases, etc. They left after being dumbfounded by a "sculpture" of dog poop.
- Summer's about to go in the copy room and she asks Tom and his friend if she can get them anything, Tom says "I think you know what I need", Summer deadpans, then Tom saves face by saying "Toner."
- The cheesy lovey-dovey flashback interrupted by an outburst of "I hate this song!" Turns out he actually shouted that -- inside a bus. The driver proceeds to say something like "Sir, I'm gonna need to have you exit the vehicle."
- Oh, and the Puma.

Its one of my favorite films of the decade of the 2000s, I rate it a 10/10. Ambitious project that succeeds in spades, haunting film.

Sad the ZD didn't get other great film roles like this and is doing mediocre TV.

reply

I agree OP this is a very underrated movie.

reply

I also agree, this film is great.

reply

Agreed. One of my favourite rom-coms and unlike any other. I love the expectations/reality scene and the kind of gentle vistas across LA/California, and the time period it's set in (feels like a poignant and coherent phase of a person's life)

This really feels like something I can relate to.

no, there are many stupid people in this world, specially males.

Easily the top 5 rom-com's I've ever seen, up there with About a Boy, Groundhog Day, The Princess Bride, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

And I really really hoped I wouldn't die
