There are 2700 black people in the academy! Stop whining already!

Also, the president of the academy (for the last 3 years) is Cheryl Boone Isaacs who is also African American. Selma didn't get nominated because it just wasn't good enough. I don't know what else to say? There were better films out there that deserved it more?

Why is this so hard to swallow?

If you watch this film, it has a great motive behind it and definitely hits home to how revolutionary MLK was. That is about it. I can't see any good performances from anybody in this cast. Nothing as good as the performances in Birdman, Foxcatcher, American Sniper, Whiplash, etc.

Liar.
6,200 members of the Academy. No more than 4% non white.
Liar.

Google "how many black people are in the academy of motion pictures?"

One of the answers will quote Denzel Washington saying that they have made huge improvements adding minorities and that almost 1/3 are black now. It used to be less than 4% but that isn't the case anymore.

reply

Widely cited LA Times article: 94% white; 77% male; average age 63.
I know members of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. There ain't 2,000 Black folks in it!

reply

What kind of crap are you peddling. There would be less than 600 voting black members. At least try and stay somewhere in the vicinity of the truth.

what are you smoking, OP?

The Academy has been giving out its hefty bonuses in the form of Oscars (27 to be exact.) to the Black community for years. Yes, of the more than 2,700 Oscars that have been awarded over the 83 years of Oscar glitz and glam, 27 of those have gone to African Americans.

4% or so

reply

Selma got nominated, fyi.

reply

And what Washington said as quoted in the newspaper, was that the non white membership of The Academy, in his opinion, should roughly equal the general non white percentage of the population--about 1/3.

You are either lying or you just don't know what you are talking about.

Take your pick.

reply

Just double checked the LA Times article:Blacks 2%, Latinos less than 2%.

2% of 6,200 is not 2,700. Unless you are using some special cipherin' unknown to civilized man.

reply

In summary: Who picks the Oscars? 63 year old white men, typically. Perfect snapshot of America.

Move on, nothing for you to see in this thread.

Crickets from the original poster (op).

reply

The sound of the crickets is deafening.

reply

why don't you stop whining about other people whining.

reply

No whining. Just calling someone out for their blatant lies.

reply

They've already said that 90% of the academy is white and male. There is reason for concern. Cheryl Boone Isaacs doesn't make the nominations if it wasn't obvious seeing as she thought there was a nominee called "Dick Poop"

reply

Besides more people of color it desperately needs youth (something like 17% is under 40) and women

reply

even back in 1996, the whiteness of the film industry and the oscars was called into question. nothing has changed much in the last 10 years, despite the fact that there is a "black president" of the academy.

a black president didn't make racism go away.

pretty familiar, hmm?

Blacks are going to bitch regardless, so who cares?

Says, Tommy Boy.

Additionally, most of the white ones feel compelled to vote for black propaganda, whether it's good or a pile of sht. Members of the academy even admitted to voting 12 Years a Slave as Best Picture without even seeing it.

reply

That's for almost all movies entered, not just that one. I saw a documentary once where one voter said, "Who has the time to watch all those films?" It was in reference to foreign film entrees which reached to almost 95 that particular year.

The Oscars are a joke, period. Too many films, with too many sections to vote on, with too little members to collectively vote accurately on; or just based on intellectual, emotional, technical, etc., worth of production and/or performance.

It's probably why only those that mainly really tend to be nominated are those that come out mid to late October to December, and the fact that a high production film only has to show one time before the end of the year shows how ridiculous the entire thing is. I think it's called "Oscar baiting". The sole purpose of these films are to win Oscars.

There are films produced just so they can release them that one time to bait Oscar voters because they're usually just premieres, and tend to only show the films in places with high percentage of members.

The Academy Awards themselves have always been a joke. So, why people get so upset over a joke is beyond me.
